Then they ride it in December and understand what everyone has been going on about.
The holiday overlay at Disneyland is not a decoration hung on an existing ride. It is a genuine transformation, inside and out, and arguably the most impressive seasonal change Disney makes at any park, anywhere.
Which is why the closing date matters, and it is now on the calendar.

What the Disneyland Refurbishment Calendar Shows
According to the Disneyland Resort refurbishment calendar, the attraction goes down October 30.
In the weeks after, Disney dresses it with decorations representing holiday traditions from around the world, and the famous theme song gets blended with classics including “Jingle Bells” and “Deck the Halls.”
Disney has not announced a reopening date.
For context, last year the ride closed early on October 29 and the overlay opened November 13. If that pattern holds, roughly two weeks of installation is the expectation.
Why It Takes Two Weeks
This is the part people underestimate.
The exterior alone gets 400,000 lights, along with ornate seasonal landscaping and a Santa hat placed on the attraction’s iconic clock face.
The interior receives festive decorations throughout, and the audio is re-scored rather than simply swapped. Blending the “small world” theme with holiday standards means the music has to work across every scene in the ride, which is a considerably more involved job than playing a different track.
Two weeks is not Disney taking its time. That is roughly what an installation of this scale requires.
The Timing Has One Catch
Worth flagging for anyone planning an October visit.
Closing October 30 means the attraction is unavailable for the final stretch of Halloween Time at Disneyland.
If small world is a must-ride for your group and your trip lands at the very end of October, you are going to miss it in both forms. The standard version will be closed and the holiday version will not be open yet.
That gap is the one genuine downside of how Disney schedules this, and it catches people every year.
When the Disneyland Holiday Season Officially Starts
The broader Disneyland Resort holiday season runs November 13, 2026 through January 6, 2027.
That date matters, because “it’s a small world” Holiday is one of the anchors of the entire celebration rather than a standalone attraction change.
The overlay serves as a backdrop for the nighttime spectacular, alongside Rivers of America and Sleeping Beauty’s Winter Castle. All three locations, plus Main Street, U.S.A., feature nightly snowfall.
What Else Is Happening at Disneyland Park
If you are planning around the overlay, here is the rest of what surrounds it.
Main Street, U.S.A. gets a 60-foot Christmas tree, and Sleeping Beauty Castle becomes a snow-capped Winter Castle lit each night by 80,000 twinkling lights.
Returning entertainment includes:
- A Christmas Fantasy Parade, with reserved seating available through a dining package at the Plaza Inn
- Believe…In Holiday Magic fireworks over Sleeping Beauty Castle
- Haunted Mansion Holiday in New Orleans Square, which is already running
Mickey, Minnie, and friends appear in new festive outfits inspired by holiday travel and an alpine gathering. Santa Claus has moved from his usual Fantasyland Theatre location, which is now home to Bluey’s Best Day Ever.
The Holiday Time at the Disneyland Resort Guided Tour also returns, with booking details expected later this year.
What Else Is Happening at Disney California Adventure
The second park carries its own substantial lineup.
World of Color, Season of Light returns after not performing during the 2025 holiday season, which makes it one of the bigger additions this year.
Cars Land gets another Haul-iday season with lights, bows, and wreaths, plus the nightly Sh-boom moment and two ride overlays in Luigi’s Joy to the Whirl and Mater’s Jingle Jamboree.
Disney Festival of Holidays returns with six marketplaces, and the Sip and Savor Pass is back with six digital coupons for eligible food and nonalcoholic beverages.
Other entertainment includes the Holiday Toy Drummers in Paradise Gardens Park, Mickey’s Happy Holidays cavalcade, A Musical Christmas with Mariachi Alegría de Disneyland and Miguel, Mirabel’s Gift of the Seasons, and the returning Disney ¡Viva Navidad! street party.
Santa greets guests at the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail, which becomes a holiday playground.
Beyond the Disneyland Parks
Downtown Disney transforms beginning November 13 with nightly snowfall, seasonal food and beverages, and live entertainment at the Downtown Disney LIVE! Stage.
From November 11 through January 6, guests can purchase an activity map and explore Chip and Dale’s Ornament Trail, redeeming the completed map for an ornament keepsake.
The resort hotels add Christmas trees, a seven-foot gingerbread display at Disney’s Grand Californian modeled after the hotel’s architecture, Santa meet and greets, and holiday dining including Goofy’s Kitchen Celebrates the Holidays and Mickey’s Christmas Carol Feast.
Disney is also offering 20 percent off hotel stays at Disneyland Resort from October through December 2026.

If you want the standard version of “it’s a small world,” you have until October 29.
If you want the holiday version, aim for November 13 or later, though Disney has not confirmed the overlay’s exact opening date and it has opened alongside the season in past years.
And if your trip falls in that gap between October 30 and mid-November, plan around it rather than being surprised at the entrance.
The overlay is worth building a trip around. Just make sure you are visiting when it actually exists.
