Released in 2001, Shrek follows an antisocial ogre (Mike Myers) forced to rescue Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) for Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow), only to fall in love with her himself.
The film became a defining DreamWorks hit, grossing nearly $500 million worldwide and winning the first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Its legacy now spans sequels, spinoffs, a musical, and theme park attractions, with Myers, Murphy, and Diaz returning for Shrek 5 on June 30, 2027.
But Universal is also giving the original Shrek a new version.
New Version of ‘Shrek’ Revealed
Universal is partnering with shared reality company Cosm on a new version of Shrek, created specifically for the company’s 87-foot, 12K domed screens. The release will mark the film’s 25th anniversary.
The original movie will remain in its traditional 16:9 format, but additional visuals will appear across the surrounding dome to extend scenes beyond the main screen. Universal, DreamWorks Animation, Cosm, and visual effects studio Reel FX worked together on the project.
According to the companies, locations including Shrek’s Swamp, Duloc’s Arena, the Kingdom of Far Far Away, and Dragon’s Keep will feature prominently in the new presentation. The main film itself will continue to follow Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and the rest of the original characters.
Shrek will be the first animated film presented at Cosm. Warner Bros. became the first studio to partner with the company in 2025, initially adapting The Matrix for the format before adding titles including Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
Cosm currently operates venues in Inglewood, Dallas, Atlanta, and Detroit, with another location planned for Cleveland next year. While the company is best known for screening live sports, films have become an increasingly important part of its programming.
Tickets for Shrek will go on sale later this fall, with a premiere date set to be announced in the coming weeks. The film is also the first release under a wider multi-film partnership between Cosm and Universal.
What Do We Know About ‘Shrek 5’?
Shrek 5 arrives on June 30, 2027.
Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz will reprise their roles as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona, marking the first mainline Shrek film since Shrek Forever After in 2010.
This time, Shrek and Fiona’s children are considerably older. Zendaya voices their daughter Felicia, while Marcello Hernández and Skyler Gisondo play Fergus and Farkle. The first trailer also shows the family traveling through Far Far Away, encountering a giant, and eventually landing in jail alongside Donkey (and has sparked backlash with some fans due to Shrek’s evolving design).
Franchise veterans Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn are directing the sequel, with Brad Ableson serving as co-director. The film has already moved release dates twice, shifting from July 2026 to December 2026 before settling on summer 2027.
