Credit: NetflixFans who watched Season 1 of Wednesday probably had a decent idea of where Netflix planned to take Wednesday Addams next.
With Season 3 in production, that original path looks very different.
The series has evolved considerably since Wednesday first walked through the gates of Nevermore Academy. Some of that comes naturally as characters and stories develop, but one major piece of Wednesday’s original storyline has steadily faded into the background.
That wasn’t necessarily an accident, either.
Jenna Ortega has been vocal about what she believes works for Wednesday and, perhaps more importantly, what doesn’t. As her creative influence on the Netflix hit has grown, the show has moved further away from one storyline that played a significant role in Season 1.
There were still a few intriguing traces of it in Season 2. However, anyone expecting Season 3 to pick that thread back up, finally, may be disappointed.
And Ortega’s long-running pushback helps explain why.
The Next Chapter Is Already Taking Shape
Netflix isn’t wasting time getting its biggest supernatural series back in front of cameras.
Production on Wednesday Season 3 officially began near Dublin in February 2026, with Ortega returning alongside Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, and other familiar cast members. Netflix has also added several newcomers, including Winona Ryder, Eva Green, Chris Sarandon, Noah Taylor, Oscar Morgan, and Kennedy Moyer.
Netflix has not announced an official Season 3 premiere date.
While external sources have suggested a potential late 2027 release, Netflix has not confirmed a release date yet.
Major plot details remain under wraps, but one element of Wednesday’s story already appears unlikely to return to its Season 1 prominence.
Season 1 Seemed To Be Building Toward Something Bigger
Romance became an unexpectedly large piece of Wednesday Season 1.
Wednesday found herself caught between Tyler Galpin and Xavier Thorpe. Tyler initially appeared to be the more ordinary choice before Wednesday discovered he was the Hyde responsible for a string of brutal attacks.
Xavier, meanwhile, spent much of the season trying to get closer to Wednesday, even as she suspected him of being connected to the killings.
That created a classic television love triangle, even if Wednesday herself never behaved like a typical teenage romantic lead.
By Season 2, however, Xavier had disappeared from the story. Percy Hynes White did not return for Season 2. Allegations of sexual misconduct had surfaced online against the actor in 2023, which Hynes White publicly denied. Netflix did not publicly identify the allegations as the reason for his departure, while the series explained Xavier’s absence by sending him to Reichenbach Academy in Switzerland.
That left Tyler as the most obvious remaining connection to Wednesday’s romantic past.
One Relationship Still Refuses To Completely Disappear
Season 2 didn’t restore the romance, but it didn’t completely erase the strange connection between Wednesday and Tyler either.
Their interactions continued carrying emotional tension, something showrunner Alfred Gough has acknowledged. He described their relationship as having something “unspoken” between them and said sparks still fly when the characters share scenes.
That leaves an obvious path the writers could have explored.
Tyler could eventually learn to control his Hyde abilities as he confronts his feelings for Wednesday. Wednesday, meanwhile, could potentially wrestle with whether she could ever forgive someone who deceived her and caused so much destruction.
Under a different creative direction, that could easily become a major Season 3 subplot.
Instead, Wednesday’s romantic future looks considerably less certain.
Jenna Ortega Has Been Fighting This Idea for Years
Ortega’s resistance to the romance isn’t new.
Following Season 1, she openly discussed her frustration with Wednesday becoming trapped in a love triangle. Ortega said the storyline “made no sense” for the character and revealed that she had pushed back on creative decisions she didn’t believe felt authentic to Wednesday.
She later celebrated the decision to remove a conventional love interest from Season 2 as the series leaned further into horror.
That matters even more because Ortega was appointed an executive producer beginning with Season 2, giving her greater involvement in the show’s creative process.
It doesn’t mean Wednesday and Tyler can never share complicated feelings again. Gough’s comments make clear that the writers still recognize their unusual chemistry.
But there’s a major difference between acknowledging that connection and turning Tyler back into Wednesday’s boyfriend.
Based on the direction established after Season 1, a full romantic reconciliation currently appears much less likely than it once did.
Wednesday May Have Already Chosen a Different Path
Season 1 introduced a version of Wednesday that seemed prepared to mix murder mysteries, supernatural horror, and teenage romance.
The series has gradually pulled away from that last ingredient.
Ortega never hid her feelings about the original love triangle, and the creative team subsequently removed a traditional romantic storyline from Wednesday’s immediate journey. Season 3 now has an opportunity to continue developing friendships, family relationships, mysteries, and Wednesday’s darker personal growth without forcing her into another conventional romance.
Tyler could still complicate things. Their history makes that almost inevitable whenever they meet.
But viewers waiting for Wednesday to forgive him, rekindle old feelings, and turn their twisted connection into a traditional relationship probably shouldn’t count on Season 3 to head that way.
Wednesday Addams may be proving that she never needed a boyfriend to make her story interesting in the first place.
