For a character who debuted in 2006, he has stayed in circulation better than many recent Pixar creations, and a big part of that is because his world maps so cleanly onto real motorsport.
This weekend, he is going somewhere new, and this time it is not a fictional circuit.
Lightning McQueen is appearing at the Formula 1 Gran Premio d’Italia 2026 in Monza, Italy, running September 4 through 6. And he is not showing up as a photo op in a fan zone. He has an actual role for the weekend.
He also looks different from the way you have ever seen him.
Why Lightning McQueen Is There
The appearance is part of Disney’s ongoing “Fuel the Magic” campaign with Formula 1.
The timing is deliberate. Cars turns 20 this year, and Lightning McQueen Day falls on September 5, which lands squarely in the middle of the Monza race weekend. Disney is stacking the anniversary, the character’s own day, and one of the most historic circuits in motorsport into a single event.
Monza is a smart choice for this, too. It is the fastest circuit on the F1 calendar and one of the oldest, and it carries a specific place in Italian racing culture. If you are going to put an animated race car on a real Grand Prix weekend, that is the one to pick.
The Francesco Bernoulli Detail
Here is the part that will land hardest with fans who know the films.
McQueen received a special invitation from Francesco Bernoulli, his longtime rival.
For anyone who needs the refresher, Bernoulli is the Italian open-wheel Formula racer introduced in Cars 2, and he was McQueen’s primary competitor during the World Grand Prix. He is arrogant, extremely fast, and Italian, which makes him the obvious character to be extending an invitation to a Grand Prix at Monza.
That is a genuinely well-considered piece of storytelling for what could have been a straightforward marketing appearance. Disney did not just drop McQueen at an F1 race. They built a reason for him to be there that fits the continuity of the films.
Lightning McQueen Is the Official Support Vehicle
McQueen will serve as the weekend’s official support vehicle.
That is a real function rather than a decorative one, and it means he will be visible in an operational capacity across the weekend rather than parked somewhere for pictures.
He also sports an all-new look inspired by the Disney x Formula 1 collaboration. Given that McQueen’s red and yellow Rust-eze livery is one of the most recognizable designs in modern animation, changing it at all is a notable decision, and it is the main reason this appearance is generating attention rather than a shrug.
The Safety Car Is Getting a Makeover
This might be the most surprising element of the whole thing.
A special Cars-inspired makeover of the Mercedes-AMG Official FIA Safety Car will debut exclusively for the race weekend.
The safety car is not a background prop. It leads the field during formation laps and deploys during incidents, which means it appears on the world television broadcast repeatedly across a race weekend. Putting a Cars treatment on it is a significantly bigger placement than a character appearance, and it will be seen by an audience that has nothing to do with Disney.
The First Cars x Formula 1 Collection
Disney also revealed the first-ever Cars x Formula 1 collection.
Attendees at Monza will be able to shop it on site during the race weekend. Select items will also be available online through Disney Store and the Formula 1 Official Online Store.
A crossover collection between a Pixar franchise and Formula 1 is an unusual product category, and the overlap between motorsport collectors and Disney collectors is larger than either group tends to admit.
What Else Is Happening at Monza
Beyond McQueen himself, the weekend includes several Cars-inspired elements.
Guests will find Cars-themed experiences throughout the fan zone, including a Mattel activation bringing the world of Radiator Springs to life. Mattel has held the Cars die-cast license since the first film, so that partnership makes obvious sense in a space full of people who collect model cars.
There will also be a special screening of Cars during race weekend as part of the film’s 20th anniversary celebration.
Showing the movie at an actual Grand Prix, on a weekend built around the character’s anniversary, is the kind of full-circle programming that works whether you came for the racing or the film.
Why This Partnership Makes Sense
Disney and Formula 1 announced their collaboration earlier, and this is the most visible execution of it so far.
The logic is straightforward. F1 has grown enormously with younger and more family-oriented audiences over the past several years, largely driven by streaming exposure. Cars is a franchise about racing that an entire generation grew up with.
There is a real chance that a kid at Monza this weekend knows Lightning McQueen far better than they know any driver on the grid, and Disney is betting that works in both directions.
For a character celebrating twenty years, ending up as the official support vehicle at the Italian Grand Prix is a strange and fitting place to land.
