The future of Jurassic Park is no longer certain following the news that director Gareth Edwards has left the next film over “creative differences.”

Is it time for Universal to finally consider rebooting the long-running film series?

Gareth Edwards Exits Jurassic World 5

Last week, Deadline reported that director Gareth Edwards will not be returning for the sequel to last year’s Jurassic World Rebirth.

“Insiders say the decision was made due to creative differences, and Edwards will now focus on other original projects he is developing,” the outlet writes, adding, “The studio is opening up the search for a new director.”

The 2025 film, helmed by Edwards and written by David Koepp, grossed $869.1 million worldwide despite receiving negative reviews from longtime fans and critics.

Universal released a statement Thursday saying, “We had an incredible experience working with Gareth on Jurassic World Rebirth.”

Jurassic Park Needs a Reboot

Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey are said to be reprising their roles in the new film, which is now expected to begin shooting in 2027.

The news of Edwards’ exit has rocked the Jurassic Park fan community, with many now calling for David Koepp—who’s also back on board—to leave the project after he wrote the franchise into a corner with Rebirth by undoing the fan-favorite global dinosaur premise.

Some fans are even hoping that Universal will consider rebooting the franchise simply to end the continuity of the films.

An approach similar to HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series—said to be a more “faithful adaptation” of the source material—is something that keeps appearing on social media and in other online forums, with many feeling that Michael Crichton’s two original novels, Jurassic Park and The Lost World, have enough material to justify a series that’s separate from the films.
