While the first major James Bond reboot to be released under Amazon MGM Studios (formed through the acquisition of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) has finally been released, there’s now some doubt over a future 007 project.

007 First Light is the highly anticipated third-person action-adventure video game from IO Interactive. Released on May 27, it has launched to wide critical praise and has also sold nearly 3 million copies during its first two weeks. Starring Irish actor Patrick Gibson as James Bond, the game is an origin story that follows the young MI6 recruit as he sets out to “earn his number.”

Amazon MGM’s next major Bond reboot is the new film, which has landed director Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Dune: Part Two) and writer Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders).

Recently, the studio confirmed that the hunt for the new Bond has begun, with casting director Nina Gold reportedly leading the search. The untitled film will start a new continuity unrelated to the Daniel Craig era, which ended with No Time to Die (2021).

Meanwhile, another major James Bond project appears to have been canceled.

James Bond Has Been Canceled

The Sun reports that Amazon is not planning to continue the official James Bond-themed reality competition television series 007: Road To a Million on Prime Video.

The show, hosted by Succession star Brian Cox, sees contestants pair up and undertake globe-trotting missions in a bid to win a huge cash prize. The show reportedly cost millions in production, while also having to set aside millions in prize funds for each of the two seasons.

007: Road To a Million premiered on Amazon Prime Video on November 10, 2023. The second season launched in 2025. However, it looks like the streamer won’t be launching a third season.

According to The Sun, a spokeswoman for Prime Video said: “There are no current plans to extend beyond the two seasons,” while a TV insider alleged the following reasons for the shelving:

“Among Bond fans there were grave doubts over the whole concept because making what’s essentially a gameshow out of such a revered franchise was a drastic step. There was the hope that it might be a surprise success, but that just has happened – and it’s caused huge expense for Amazon, not to mention being a slight embarrassment for them. Moving forwards it does lave a question mark over what other TV spin-off they might be considering and whether they might suffer a similar fate to 007: Road to a Million.”

It’s important to note that Amazon itself has yet to make an official public announcement regarding the future of 007: Road to a Million.

The Sun also writes that “Prime Video are believed to be looking at spin-off TV projects” set within the world of Bond, including The Moneypenny Diaries, which would be based off the book series of the same name by author Samantha Weinberg (under the pseudonym Kate Westbrook).

However, this project has not been mentioned by Amazon MGM regarding its future Bond plans, which so far only includes the film reboot.
