But guests scheduled to visit Disney’s island destinations in the coming days may notice something unusually absent from the experience.

Alcohol sales are expected to be temporarily prohibited at both Disney Castaway Cay and Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point for one day next week due to a nationwide election-related restriction taking place across The Bahamas.

While the temporary policy does not affect onboard operations, it could still alter the experience for some guests spending the day ashore.

Bahamas Election Triggers Temporary Alcohol Ban

The restriction is tied to The Bahamas’ upcoming general election and is expected to remain in effect on Tuesday, May 12, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time while polls are open.

Under Bahamian law, the sale of what officials describe as “intoxicating liquor” is prohibited during election hours. Because Disney’s private island destinations operate within Bahamian territory and jurisdiction, the policy is expected to apply there as well.

That means guests visiting Castaway Cay or Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point during the restricted timeframe may temporarily lose access to alcoholic beverages sold on the islands themselves.

The unusual policy effectively creates a temporary “dry day” across large portions of the country, including cruise line-operated private destinations.

Disney Is Not the Only Cruise Line Affected

Although Disney Cruise Line guests are directly impacted, the temporary restriction extends far beyond Disney’s operations.

Several other cruise lines also operate private destinations throughout The Bahamas, including Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, and MSC Cruises.

Private cruise ports potentially affected include Great Stirrup Cay, Celebration Key, and Ocean Cay, all of which fall under Bahamian governance during the election period.

So far, Disney has not publicly issued a formal statement regarding the restriction. However, Royal Caribbean acknowledged the temporary policy in comments surrounding the election-related ban, stating:

“Royal Caribbean is respecting and complying with all local laws and regulations, as we do with every destination we visit.”

The cruise company also clarified that alcohol service onboard its ships would continue operating normally, with the restriction applying only to onshore sales.

At this time, Disney Cruise Line operations onboard its ships are also expected to continue as usual.

Based on current sailing schedules, two Disney Cruise Line vessels appear likely to be impacted by the temporary alcohol restriction on May 12.

The Disney Wish is expected to dock at Castaway Cay, while the Disney Fantasy is scheduled to visit Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

Guests visiting either destination during election hours may encounter limited beverage options while ashore.

Importantly, current information suggests the restriction only applies to alcohol sales on the islands themselves. Bars, lounges, and beverage service onboard the ships are still expected to function normally before and after port visits.
