NEW: Disney World To Open in Middle East, Regional Plans Expand

Disney’s plans for the Middle East are much bigger than we thought.

Last year, The Walt Disney Company shocked fans by confirming a new theme park resort on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. Developed with Miral, this marks Disney’s first Middle East destination with a waterfront park that will blend its IP with regional culture, targeted for the early 2030s.

These plans are set to continue, despite ongoing tension in the region. The United Arab Emirates remains stable but is operating against a backdrop of escalating conflict involving Iran, the U.S., and Israel, with missile and drone attacks, airspace disruption, and the temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz all impacting travel, security, and regional stability.

Not only are they continuing, but reports suggest they’re bigger than initially anticipated.

Disney World Goes to the Middle East

A newly surfaced domain registration is adding fresh intrigue to Disney’s Middle East expansion, hinting that the company’s ambitions in Abu Dhabi may stretch far beyond a single theme park.

Records show Disney secured “disneyworldabudhabi.com” just one day before publicly confirming the project, fueling speculation about a multi-park resort (via Blooloop).

The name stands out because Disney has yet to confirm any official branding for the destination. Early references have varied, with former Disney CEO Bob Iger previously calling it “Disneyland Abu Dhabi,” while other materials use broader terms such as “Disney Abu Dhabi” or simply describe it as a theme park resort project.

Behind the scenes, The Walt Disney Company appears to be keeping its options open.

Previous domain registrations tied to the project include variations like “emiratesdisneyland.com” and “yasdisneyland.com,” suggesting multiple naming directions are under consideration as plans continue to evolve.

The scale of the development is also driving speculation. The resort will be built on Yas Island, a growing entertainment hub already home to major attractions such as Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, and Ferrari World.

Miral’s chairman, Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, previously described the project at launch as “a whole new world of imagination,” which would align with the idea of the resort becoming more than one park and on a similar scale to Disney World.

Disney’s proposed site spans roughly 479 acres. For context, Magic Kingdom is 107 acres.

Are More Disney Theme Parks on the Way?

Disney’s Abu Dhabi theme park may be the only confirmed upcoming theme park, but fans believe plenty more are in the works.

Rumors surrounding Shanghai Disney Resort have intensified in recent months, with reports suggesting a second gate could finally move forward. Early plans for the resort always included space for another park, and renewed chatter – alongside leaked concept art – points to a large-scale expansion potentially announced around the resort’s 10th anniversary in June. That second park has reportedly evolved from an EPCOT-style concept into something more franchise-driven, with speculation around major IPs like Avatar shaping its direction.

Over in Japan, attention has shifted to Tokyo Disney Resort, where persistent rumors of a third park – often dubbed “DisneySky” – have resurfaced. The concept, which would complement the resort’s existing land- and sea-themed parks, has circulated for years but is now said to be back under consideration.

Although nothing has been confirmed, the idea aligns with ongoing large-scale investment at the resort, including major redevelopments like a rebuilt Space Mountain area set to debut in 2027.
