The Marvel Cinematic Universe appears to be undergoing another period of quiet—but significant—transition, particularly when it comes to the Ant-Man franchise. A mix of reported exits, shifting priorities, and a major new casting confirmation suggests that Marvel Studios may be turning the page on one era while setting the stage for another.

The End of the Road for Luis?

A new report from industry insider Daniel Richtman claims that Michael Peña—who played fan-favorite Luis—may be finished with the MCU for good.

While Marvel Studios has yet to confirm the claim, Richtman stated that Peña is “never coming back,” adding that he’s “not sure what happened” behind the scenes. If true, it would mark a surprisingly quiet exit for one of the most memorable supporting characters introduced in Ant-Man (2015).

Luis became an instant hit thanks to his comedic timing and unforgettable storytelling recaps, later returning in 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp. However, his absence from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) raised early questions about his future.

Director Peyton Reed previously explained that the third installment’s deep dive into the Quantum Realm simply didn’t allow room for Luis, noting that no version of the script ever included him. Now, that absence may look more like a permanent departure than a one-off creative decision.

More Familiar Faces Stepping Away

Peña may not be the only one leaving the Ant-Man corner behind.

Veteran MCU star Michael Douglas, who portrayed Hank Pym, has openly suggested he’s stepping back from acting, casting doubt on whether he’ll reprise his role again. Meanwhile, Evangeline Lilly—Hope van Dyne/The Wasp—has also indicated she is taking an extended break from Hollywood.

Together, these potential exits point to a broader winding down of the original Ant-Man ensemble, which has been a fixture of the MCU since Phase Two.

The Kang Factor and a Changing Narrative

Complicating matters further is Marvel’s recent pivot away from one of its central villains.

Following legal controversies surrounding Jonathan Majors, Marvel Studios officially cut ties with the actor, who had been positioned as Kang the Conqueror—the Multiverse Saga’s overarching antagonist after his debut in Loki and major role in Quantumania.

Kang was originally expected to anchor multiple upcoming Avengers films, but Majors’ removal forced Marvel to reassess its long-term storytelling plans. This shift has reportedly led to creative changes, including reworking future crossover events and potentially refocusing the central threat facing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

A New Hero Steps Into the Spotlight

While several established names may be on their way out, Marvel appears ready to elevate a new generation—starting with Kathryn Newton. The actress, who plays Cassie Lang, will now return in Avengers: Doomsday (2026), marking a significant step up for the character after her expanded role in Quantumania.

Newton’s involvement has surfaced through social media, with the actress showing herself receiving a mini chair similar to those used in the viral casting livestream last year. Newton joined the MCU as Cassie Lang in 2023, replacing Abby Ryder Fortson and Emma Fuhrmann, who had both previously played the role.

What Avengers: Doomsday Means for the MCU

Though official plot details remain under wraps, Avengers: Doomsday is widely viewed as a cornerstone entry in the MCU’s evolving Multiverse Saga.

The film is expected to unite heroes from across multiple timelines and franchises, potentially dealing with catastrophic Multiversal events such as incursions or reality collapse. In the wake of the Kang pivot, the project will also introduce a different central villain in the form of Robert Downey Jr.’s Victor Von Doom/Doctor Doom, reshaping the direction of the saga entirely.

With Marvel Studios aiming to course-correct after a string of uneven box office performances (and potentially even erase years’ worth of content), Doomsday is shaping up to be a high-stakes ensemble film designed to re-energize audiences and solidify the franchise’s future.

Cassie Lang and the Future of the Avengers

Cassie Lang’s growing importance reflects that future.

After stepping into a heroic role alongside Scott Lang in Quantumania, Cassie is now positioned as a potential cornerstone of the MCU’s next generation. Her inclusion in Avengers: Doomsday further fuels speculation that Marvel is building toward a Young Avengers-style team.

As legacy characters begin to exit—whether quietly, like Luis, or more definitively through actors stepping away—the MCU appears to be recalibrating around fresh faces and new storylines.

A Franchise in Transition

Taken together, these developments paint a clear picture: the Ant-Man franchise, as fans once knew it, may be evolving into something very different.

With Michael Peña potentially gone, Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lilly stepping back, and Jonathan Majors no longer part of Marvel’s long-term plans, the foundation of this corner of the MCU is shifting rapidly.

At the same time, Kathryn Newton’s move into a major Avengers-level storyline signals exactly where things are heading next. Marvel Studios may not be hitting the reset button entirely—but it’s clearly rewriting the playbook.
