Avengers: Doomsday could be about to rewrite the rules of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a big way.

A Multiversal Crisis Is Coming
According to reports over the last year, Avengers: Doomsday will dive headfirst into the concept of Multiversal “incursions”—collisions between different realities that threaten to wipe out entire universes. That idea has already been teased across recent MCU projects, but this film could take it to a whole new level.
Rather than focusing on a single team, the story brings together heroes from across Marvel’s expanding Multiverse, including the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and even the X-Men.

Steve Rogers Returns to the Spotlight
Perhaps the most surprising is the return of Steve Rogers as a central figure in the story.
After seemingly closing his arc in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, where he chose to live out a quiet life in the past, Rogers is now back in action—this time navigating the Multiverse itself. The report suggests he’ll take on a leadership role once again in the aftermath of Doctor Doom’s (Robert Downey Jr.) arrival.
That lines up with what we already know behind the scenes: directors, the Russo Brothers, have previously indicated that Steve Rogers remains essential to the overarching MCU narrative, even after his ending.

Thor’s Role Is Far From Over
As for Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, the God of Thunder reportedly remains a key player in the fight ahead.
Rather than being sidelined, Thor is said to join Rogers in tackling the Multiversal threat, traveling between universes and confronting the growing danger head-on. If anything, this suggests Marvel isn’t done with the character just yet—even after years of evolution following Endgame.
Recent buzz around the film also supports this idea, with leaks and early reports consistently pointing to Thor as one of the story’s central figures. The recently revealed Doomsday trailer shows Thor facing off against Doctor Doom with Stormbreaker.

A Mission Across Universes
One key detail? The X-Men’s return seemingly causes conflict, with reports of a Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) battle, as well as a confirmed fight between Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova and Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique.
The Bigger MCU Picture Just Got More Complicated
Here’s where things get particularly interesting—and a little confusing.
A post from Hollywood Handle on X (formerly Twitter) relaying what Kevin Feige said on stage at this year’s CinemaCon has added another layer to the speculation, suggesting that Avengers: Doomsday may position itself in a way that blurs—or even resets—the established MCU timeline.

“This film takes place where ‘Endgame’ left off but also goes back to when it all started with ‘X-Men.’”

Combined with the reported Multiversal chaos, fans are now questioning whether the past several years of Marvel storytelling actually “stick” in the way they thought. If multiple universes are colliding and being rewritten, what does that mean for everything we’ve seen since Endgame?
Could this film effectively reshape continuity heading into Avengers: Secret Wars (2027)? Or is Marvel simply using the Multiverse as a storytelling device without erasing what came before? Right now, there’s no clear answer—but the uncertainty is already fueling debate among fans trying to piece together where exactly Doomsday fits in the larger timeline.
This new information also relates to comments and reports made last year.

In a 2025 interview, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige stressed that the goal is to streamline continuity while paving the way for future stories, particularly the long-awaited introduction of the X-Men.
“Reboot is a scary word,” Feige told Variety. “Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline — we’re thinking along those lines. ‘X-Men’ is where that will happen next.”
Following those comments, industry insider Alex Perez (via Cosmic Circus) suggested this “reset” will be selective rather than absolute. “It’ll just be a quick scrub of details the MCU wants to sort of forget and redo,” Perez outlined. “This will involve the resurrection of some heroes and villains as well as the erasure of some minor events that bother fans (and Kevin Feige), but all in all, it will be like 75-80% the original timeline, with some minor changes.”

A Lead-In to Something Even Bigger
What does seem clear is that Avengers: Doomsday is not a standalone story.
Instead, it’s being positioned as a crucial stepping stone toward the next major MCU event, Secret Wars. Much like Avengers: Infinity War (2018) set the stage for Endgame, this film will act as the beginning of a two-part conclusion to the Multiverse Saga.
And if the claims are true, it won’t just be about ending one story—it’s also about starting an entirely new one.

Proceed With Caution
Leaks and insider reports have become increasingly common in the MCU era, but they don’t always pan out exactly as described. Still, with confirmations of a massive crossover involving legacy characters, it’s clear that Avengers: Doomsday is aiming high. Whether it lives up to the hype—or completely reshapes the MCU as we know it—remains to be seen.
