If you have walked down Hollywood Boulevard lately, the sounds of 1940s jazz are increasingly competing with the mechanical whir of saws and the heavy thud of demolition. Disney’s Hollywood Studios is currently a park in transition—a cinematic landscape being reedited in real-time.

While massive projects like Monsters, Inc. Land and the Sunset Boulevard transformation dominate the headlines, it is often the smaller “character swaps” that catch seasoned park-goers by surprise. This week, a long-standing resident of Echo Lake officially “melted away” to make room for a chaotic intergalactic superstar, marking yet another shift in the park’s fast-moving 2026 strategy.

Experiment 626 Takes Over: Stitch Replaces Olaf at Celebrity Spotlight

In a move that surprised many “Frozen” fans on Friday, March 20, 2026, Stitch officially ousted Olaf at the Celebrity Spotlight character greeting location. Since 2016, the Celebrity Spotlight has been the permanent home of Olaf, offering guests a reliable, air-conditioned place to meet everyone’s favorite sun-loving snowman.

However, as of this week, the “Intergalactic Superstar” himself—Experiment 626, or Stitch—has moved in. This location is specifically a Disney Visa Cardmember photo opportunity, where Stitch meets daily from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. While Olaf hasn’t left the park entirely, he is no longer the star of the Celebrity Spotlight, having been moved to a standard meet-and-greet rotation elsewhere in the park.

For Stitch fans, this is a major win. The blue alien has spent years as a “roaming” character or a secondary meet-and-greet option. Now, positioned prominently near Echo Lake, his “intergalactic” backdrop is drawing massive crowds of Disney Visa cardholders. This change is widely viewed as a tactical move by Disney to capitalize on the hype surrounding the upcoming live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch.

But while Stitch is busy causing mischief at the Celebrity Spotlight, the rest of the park is being dismantled and rebuilt at a feverish pace.

Construction at the New “Art of Disney Animation” Area

One of the most significant overhauls currently underway is the total reimagining of the former Animation Courtyard. For decades, this area has been the park’s quiet center, but as of March 2026, it is a bustling construction zone destined to become “The Walt Disney Studios” lot.

The centerpiece of this revitalization is a brand-new flagship experience called The Magic of Disney Animation. This project is taking over the massive footprint left behind by the Star Wars Launch Bay, which closed in late 2025.

Construction crews are currently working on the building’s facade, which will soon feature a scale version of the iconic Sorcerer Mickey Hat seen at the real Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, California. This area is designed to bring “active production” back to the park. The experience will include:

  • Olaf Draws! An all-new Animation Academy experience featuring a state-of-the-art Audio-Animatronic Olaf who “leads” drawing classes for guests.
  • Off the Page!: A multi-room character encounter area where guests can meet various characters in spaces themed to different animation departments (Mulan in Story, Rapunzel in Layout, and Goofy in Lighting).
  • Once Upon a Studio Theater: A high-tech screening room for the Emmy-winning short, enhanced with physical effects and character “surprises” woven into the theater’s walls.

The Walt Disney Studios Courtyard is slated for a grand opening on May 26, 2026, though the interior “Magic of Disney Animation” experience is expected to debut in late summer.

Monstropolis: The Future of the “Grand Avenue” Skyline

If you look toward the back of the park, the skyline has been irrevocably changed by Monstropolis’s rise. Taking over the area formerly known as the Muppets Courtyard, this new land is Disney’s most ambitious addition since Galaxy’s Edge.

As of late March 2026, the Muppet*Vision 3D theater is officially a memory. Construction crews have stripped the brickwork from the building and are currently installing the facade for “The Glob Theater,” which will house a new Monsters, Inc. themed show.

The most exciting progress, however, is on the Monsters, Inc. Door Warehouse Coaster. Recent aerial photos and guest sightings reveal that the track supports and the massive “Door Vault” gravity building are nearing structural completion. This will be Disney’s first-ever suspended roller coaster, designed to simulate the high-speed chase through the door factory from the 2001 Pixar film.

Local landmarks like PizzeRizzo and Mama Melrose’s are also in the midst of “Monstrous” transformations. Mama Melrose’s is being rethemed as Harryhausen’s, the high-end sushi restaurant from the film, while PizzeRizzo is receiving a complete cosmetic overhaul to fit the urban-industrial aesthetic of the monster city.

The Muppet Takeover of the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster

The biggest news to hit Sunset Boulevard this month was the official closure of the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith. Earlier this month, the iconic red Stratocaster saw its last “VIP” guest before the gates were shuttered for a massive retheming project.

The attraction is now under the control of The Muppets. Disney has confirmed that the coaster is being reimagined as “Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets.” The new storyline finds guests visiting G-Force Records, which has been acquired by Scooter’s uncle, J.P. Grosse.

The highlight of the new experience will be a highly advanced Scooter animatronic in the pre-show, acting as the band manager for Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem. Guests will board “Muppet-fied” limousines (outfitted with psychedelic paint jobs) to race across Hollywood and make it to the band’s concert on time.

The iconic giant guitar outside the building is currently being stripped and repainted with an Electric Mayhem-inspired motif, complete with a “gold key” on the piano base as a nod to Dr. Teeth’s gold tooth. This “Muppet Takeover” is scheduled to open in Summer 2026, providing a much-needed thrill capacity to the park while the construction on Monstropolis continues.

Navigating the 2026 Construction Maze

With three major projects occurring simultaneously, navigating Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2026 requires a bit of strategy.

  1. Sunset Boulevard Pressure: With Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster closed, the crowds for The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and Slinky Dog Dash have reached record highs. We recommend prioritizing these first thing in the morning.
  2. Character Hunting: If you are a Disney Visa cardholder, make sure to visit Stitch at Celebrity Spotlight early in the day, as he currently only meets until noon.
  3. Dining Delays: With Harryhausen’s and the PizzeRizzo retheme under construction, dining options in the back of the park are limited. Consider mobile ordering from Docking Bay 7 or Woody’s Lunch Box well in advance.

The “Hollywood that always was and never will be” is currently becoming the “Hollywood that is being built right now.” While the construction walls are a temporary eyesore, the 2026 lineup—from Muppets on a coaster to a working door factory—promises to make Hollywood Studios the most immersive park in the world.
