Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander Harris in the cult-classic supernatural teen drama Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997 – 2003), has passed away at the age of 54.

Brendon’s family announced his death in a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter:

“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed in his sleep of natural causes. Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create.

Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was. While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing. Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart. Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support.”

Brendon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer Legacy

Buffy the Vampire Slayer centered on the “Chosen One” Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar), who was entrusted with protecting Sunnydale — a small Californian town that sat atop a “Hellmouth” — from vampires and other supernatural threats.

Brendon played geeky teen Xander Harris, a member of Buffy’s “Scooby Gang” alongside many others, including Willow Rosenberg (Alyson Hannigan), Dawn Summers (Michelle Trachtenberg), Cordelia Chase (Charisma Carpenter), Rupert Giles (Anthony Head), Oz (Seth Green), and Spike (James Marsters). His character, who often served as the voice of reason and comic relief, became an instant hit with viewers and one of many fan-favorites.

Brendon’s Personal Challenges

Brendon, who would go on to appear in other TV projects including Criminal Minds (2005–2022), brought plenty of much-needed levity to Buffy, which frequently dealt with dark storylines and human tragedy. Away from the screen, however, the actor had his own struggles, including substance abuse, mental illness, legal challenges, and physical health conditions including cauda equina syndrome, which led to several spinal surgeries, as well as a congenital heart defect.

Alyson Hannigan, who played Brendon’s on-screen bestie Willow, and Emma Caulfield, who played his ex-demon fiancée Anya, are among those who have paid tribute to the late actor.

Hannigan wrote in a heartfelt Instagram post:

“My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers. I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair.  I love you. RIP”

His Passing Follows Michelle Trachtenberg’s Death

Brendon’s passing comes just over a year after the death of his Buffy co-star Michelle Trachtenberg, who passed away in February 2025.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot Canceled

Buffy ran for seven seasons before concluding in 2003. Over the decades, it has continued to find new life away from the screen, through tie-in novels and comic books, with the character of Xander making numerous appearances throughout.

In 2025, it was announced that Sarah Michelle Gellar would be returning in a new Buffy series, but it was recently confirmed that the project had been canceled. Written by sisters Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, it was titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale and would have centered on a new slayer played by Star Wars: Skeleton Crew‘s Ryan Kiera Armstrong, one of many newcomers who had been cast in the revival.

Whether there were plans to bring back other actors from the original series, such as Nicholas Brendon, is unknown at this time.

Brendon is survived by his twin brother, Kelly Donovan, who appeared with him in the Buffy Season 5 episode ““The Replacement.”

Our thoughts are with Nicholas Brendon’s loved ones at this difficult time.
