The search for the next live-action Batman for the new DCU’s The Brave and the Bold continues. While there’s no release date for that film yet, two follow-ups to this year’s Superman have been set.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is scheduled for release in 2026, with Superman: Man of Tomorrow set to follow in 2027. So here’s hoping the next Dark Knight will make a surprise appearance in either film (or both) before his solo debut.

For now, there’s plenty going on in Gotham, with more than enough to keep DC fans occupied. Perhaps one of the most anticipated Batman projects aside from Andy Muschietti’s DCU film is the open-world game “LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight.”
A reboot in its own right, the title has already found its new Bruce Wayne/Batman in voice actor Shai Matheson, who has previously lent his vocal talents to well-known games such as “Until Dawn” and “Star Wars Outlaws.” Now, he’s set to take up the mantle of the Dark Knight in the new adventure from Traveller’s Tales and Warner Bros. Games, which will be the fifth installment in the LEGO Batman series.
So far, we’ve had a trailer and a detailed gameplay overview featuring key figures from both the developer and publisher. DC Studios’ co-CEO and Superman (2025) director James Gunn even makes an appearance in the latter.
But Matheson was nowhere to be seen (only heard). Now, speaking to indy100 at The Golden Joystick Awards 2025, the actor has shed some light on what we can expect in terms of how the game connects with the wider Batman franchise and its long history.

“The game has basically every Batman lore in existence where it’s all been shoved into one big meat grinder and then you get ‘LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight’,” he explained, adding, “It pulls from the comics, all of the films, from the animated series, the TV shows. It’s unbelievable what these guys have done. It’s going to be really exciting.”
While this isn’t new information, as Gunn already said in that behind-the-scenes video that the game is a melting pot of “different elements of Batman that we’ve loved over the years” and that it’s “an absolute celebration of everything Batman,” hearing it from the star is music to our ears. The characters alone in “Legacy of the Dark Knight” are inspired by iterations from the character’s many films, including Michelle Pfeiffer’s Selina Kyle from Batman Returns (1992), Heath Ledger’s Joker from The Dark Knight (2008), Tom Hardy’s Bane from The Dark Knight Rises (2012), and Jeffrey Wright’s Jim Gordon from The Batman (2022).
As for the Caped Crusader himself, he’s a bit of everyone. In the trailer, he directly echoes Christian Bale’s origins from Batman Begins (2005), before dropping Michael Keaton‘s iconic line “Wanna get nuts?” from Batman (1989), and is later seen walking from a fiery car wreck in an inverted shot, an homage to Robert Pattinson in The Batman. Matheson went on to say that the reaction to the game so far has been “amazing” and that “people are reacting to the fact it feels like an Arkham game but also a LEGO game.”
LEGO Batman has appeared in games, theatrical releases, short films, and across several toy lines, making him one of the most popular and most accessible versions of the character.
“Legacy of the Dark Knight” will be released on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S in 2026. Next year will also see the theatrical release of the first installment in a new series of animated films based on the Batman: Knightfall comic books.
