On Tuesday, Disneyland Resort announced plans to lay off approximately 100 cast members as part of a reorganization process amid a “period of steady, sustained operation.” Here’s what we know about the upcoming organizational changes at the Southern California Disney parks.

In California, a law known as the Cal-WARN Act mandates that employers with over 75 employees give at least 60 days’ written notice of planned mass terminations impacting 50 or more employees in a 30-day period. Businesses must provide notice to all employees and the state Employment Development Department. Members of the public can access all WARN notices on the department’s official website.

The Walt Disney Company has previously made public announcements about planned layoffs, issuing statements rather than quietly filing a WARN notice with the California Employment Development Department. Disneyland Resort followed suit on Tuesday, publishing the following statement about approximately 100 upcoming layoffs at the Southern California Disney parks:

“With our business in a period of steady, sustained operation, we are recalibrating our organization to ensure we continue to deliver exceptional experiences for our guests, while positioning Disneyland Resort for the future. As part of this, we’ve made the difficult decision to eliminate a limited number of salaried positions. We are deeply grateful for the contributions of these cast members and are committed to supporting them with care, respect, and resources during this transition.”

Theme park journalist Scott Gustin (@ScottGustin) shared the news on X (formerly known as Twitter):

Disneyland Resort is eliminating “a limited number of salaried positions” from various teams across the resort. Approximately 100 cast members will be impacted.

Here’s the full statement from a Disneyland spokesperson:

It’s unclear which departments at Disneyland Resort will be affected by the upcoming layoffs, but it appears that the impact will be distributed across several teams. Because Cal-WARN requires employers to give at least 60 days’ notice, Disney cast members will most likely continue performing their roles until early December. However, Disney hasn’t confirmed an official timeline for the layoffs.

The Walt Disney Company has performed several rounds of layoffs in the last few years. In June, approximately 200 people lost their jobs at ABC and Disney Entertainment. Disney laid off at least 3,000 employees in March of 2023 and started 2024 by terminating 115 cast members from their positions at shopDisney (now known as the Disney Store).

What do you think about Disneyland Resort’s decision to lay off these cast members? Inside the Magic would love to hear from you in the comments!
