Though many fans and critics feel that the quality of the Jurassic Park film series tends to dip with each new installment, with the latest film, Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), being no exception (in fact, you might call that entry rock bottom), there’s one thing the franchise does that’s quite admirable and unusual—at least when it comes to the silver screen.

Jurassic Park‘s Linear Storytelling Is Refreshing

Unlike many other franchises, Jurassic Park (or Jurassic World) continues to move forward chronologically along its timeline, rather than taking breaks to dish out prequels. The same can’t be said about IPs such as Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel, and The Lord of the Rings, none of which tend to commit to a straightforward path like Jurassic in terms of storytelling.

Of course, that’s not to say there are no Jurassic prequels (or “in-between-quels”) elsewhere in the franchise. The animated TV series Camp Cretaceous and its follow-up Chaos Theory are both slotted in between films. The former is set during/between Jurassic World and Fallen Kingdom, and the latter takes place during/between Fallen Kingdom and Dominion).

A New Jurassic Park Sequel Will Break New Ground

As for the films, though, Jurassic has committed to linear storytelling. Jurassic Park (1993), The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), Jurassic Park III (2001), Jurassic World (2015), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), Jurassic World Dominion (2022), and Rebirth can be watched in the order of release—there are no confusing prequel or sequel trilogies here.

However, an upcoming Jurassic installment is set to act as both a sequel and a prequel in the same way Camp Cretaceous and Chaos Theory have bridged gaps between films. The difference is that this is no animated TV series—it’s a video game. “Jurassic Park: Survival” is a first-person action-adventure that takes place 24 hours after the events of the original film.

The Game May Also Take Place During the 1993 Film

The trailer for “Survival” premiered at the Game Awards in December 2023. However, it’s been mostly radio silence from Universal and Saber Interactive since. But now, they’ve unveiled a behind-the-scenes video that showcases everything from the dinosaurs to the game’s lead Dr. Maya Joshi (Payal Mistry), and gameplay to familiar locations from the film.

Some particularly standout footage comes in the form of perfect re-creations of locations like the Visitor Center atrium, which houses the T-Rex skeleton. While key developers in the video explain how they’ve re-created Isla Nublar to immerse players in the world seen in Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece, what’s confusing about this is that the skeleton is intact. But as we know, the real T-Rex destroys it while fighting the two raptors at the end of the film.

We’re not suggesting that Saber Interactive have made a mistake or an oversight—but this could mean that part of the game will be set during the events of Jurassic Park.

After all, presumably, players will need to understand how Dr. Maya Joshi, an InGen scientist hired by Dr. Henry Wu (played by B.D. Wong in the film), came to be trapped on Isla Nublar in the first place. Another possible explanation is that we’ll get a flashback or recap of certain scenes and sequences from the 1993 film. Here’s hoping it’s both scenarios.

The Future of Jurassic Park (and Jurassic World)

There’s no release date for “Jurassic Park: Survival”, however, there are plenty of other Jurassic installments to look forward to.

“Jurassic World Evolution 3”, the next entry in the popular park management video game series, releases on October 21, Chaos Theory Season 4 premieres on Netflix on November 20, and Microsoft Flight Simulator’s “Jurassic World: Archipelago” will be available sometime in September.

Jurassic World Rebirth, which stars Scarlett Johansson (Avengers: Endgame), Jonathan Bailey (Wicked), Mahershala Ali (The Green Book), is available to watch at home now.
