The district is considering a $500,000 financial contribution to a study exploring a shared rail corridor that would support both SunRail, the region’s commuter train service, and Brightline, the high-speed intercity rail line.

The study itself carries a hefty $6 million price tag. However, funding is already being gathered. The Florida Department of Transportation and Universal Destinations & Experiences have each committed $2 million, while the City of Orlando, Seminole County, and Osceola County are each chipping in $500,000.

If approved, this expansion would introduce new rail stops near the Orange County Convention Center, South International Drive, and Orlando International Airport. Even more exciting? It could potentially lay the groundwork for Brightline’s long-awaited expansion to Tampa.

Why This Matters for Disney Guests

For years, Disney fans have dreamed of a seamless rail connection to Walt Disney World Resort. Brightline once planned a station at Disney Springs, but in 2022, those plans were scrapped after route adjustments. Now, this renewed push for transit expansion could offer a second chance at bringing high-speed rail to the parks.

A new rail corridor could make travel more convenient and cost-effective for guests flying into Orlando International Airport. Instead of relying on Disney’s now-defunct Magical Express, visitors could take a direct train to an area near the parks, reducing transportation headaches and eliminating the need for rental cars or pricey shuttle services.

This transportation development is just one piece of a much larger investment in Central Florida’s tourism district. In a landmark agreement last year, Walt Disney World committed to spending $17 billion on development within the next 10-20 years. As part of this deal, the company must invest at least $8 billion in the first decade.
