Trump’s Tariffs Will Hit Your Disney Vacation Hard

One of Donald Trump’s campaign promises was to levy massive tariffs on imported goods from countries like China, Canada, and Mexico. In the weeks leading up to his inauguration, Trump doubled down on that vowing to put a 25 percent tariff on goods coming into the country from China.

The tariffs would be levied against the companies that import the goods, not the manufacturers in these countries. The importers would, in turn, pass that additional cost onto consumers, forcing the everyday citizen to pay for the tariffs.

These new tariffs would directly impact Disney fans in several ways. The first and most obvious would be the lack of discretionary spending on Disney-related items.

Some estimates suggest that these tariffs would cost the average American household $3,000-$6,000 a year. With inflation and the rising cost of Walt Disney World vacations, that could seriously dent people’s ability to afford a Disney trip.

However, if a family could still afford a trip to Central Florida, there would be increased costs that come along with staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel. First and foremost, expect the price of food to increase dramatically.

The United States imports $18.7 billion worth of food from Mexico, $40.5 billion from Canada, and $4.6 billion from China. Based on those tariffs, Disney World guests could expect the cost of food to increase by 10-25 percent.

Nearly all of Disney’s souvenirs are made in a country that would face a Trump tariff. That would also significantly impact the cost of buying almost everything at Disney World.

Then there are the hidden costs that few people are talking about. The tariffs would cause a massive spike in the price of gasoline.

The United States imports 4.4 million barrels of petroleum from Canada every day. That accounts for roughly 52 percent of the country’s gasoline imports. America cannot make up for that much oil.

This would increase prices on flying or driving to the parks, transportation to and from the airport, and transportation around the Walt Disney World Resort. While the bus system at Disney World is free, technically, the cost is built into your vacation.

The final unknown is the cost of delivering all these items to Disney World. Delivery cost increases will be passed along to the consumers at a much higher rate.

Trump’s promised tariffs could dramatically increase the cost of a Walt Disney World vacation. The problem is that Disney guests won’t know just how much until it’s too late.
