Credit: LucasfilmFor years, fans have wondered what Star Wars might look like if Lucasfilm embraced the kind of alternate-universe storytelling that has become a major part of Marvel. While the franchise has explored plenty of unusual possibilities, it has never quite received a What If…? series of its own.
The closest examples have arguably been projects such as Star Wars: Visions, which gives creators the freedom to tell standalone stories outside the main continuity, and the various LEGO Star Wars projects that have played with the franchise’s characters, stories, and lore in comedic ways.
Now, Star Wars is finally getting something that comes surprisingly close to the concept — and it’s arriving as part of the franchise’s 50th anniversary celebrations in 2027.
Star Wars Gets Alternate Universe Adventure
The project is Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles, a five-issue comic-book crossover that will bring the galaxy far, far away directly into the Marvel Universe. Written by Kevin Smith and illustrated by David Marquez, the series launches in January 2027.
Rather than simply imagining an alternate version of a familiar story, Hope Assembles asks what happens when characters from two of the biggest franchises in entertainment collide.
Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Han Solo, and Chewbacca will encounter Marvel characters including Spider-Man and the Avengers, while Darth Vader and Doctor Doom form an alliance. The crossover takes place in Marvel’s Earth-616 universe, making this considerably more than just another LEGO-style reimagining of the Star Wars universe.

The project is particularly fitting for the anniversary.
Marvel published its first Star Wars comic in 1977, the same year A New Hope debuted in theaters, and Hope Assembles is bringing the two franchises together 50 years later.
It’s just one part of a much larger celebration. Star Wars: The Experience – A Journey Through the Galaxy will open at Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute in February 2027, while the original Star Wars (1977) will return to theaters for a limited engagement on February 19.
There’s also Star Wars: A New Hope – Triple Take, which retells the original movie through the perspectives of Luke, Leia, and Han, and the Welsh-language Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd, which arrives on Welsh broadcaster S4C and its streaming platforms on Christmas Day, 2026.
So, while Hope Assembles isn’t quite Star Wars: What If…?, it may be the closest Lucasfilm has come to giving fans an official answer to that question.
