Credit: UniversalUniversal Orlando Resort is heading into one of its busiest and most popular stretches of the year, but guests visiting in September may notice something frustrating when they look at the park calendar.
The parks simply aren’t staying open very late.
Halloween Horror Nights naturally changes the operating schedule at Universal Studios Florida. On event nights, the park closes to regular daytime guests at 5:00 p.m. so Universal can prepare for the separately ticketed Halloween event.
That’s nothing new. Anyone planning a September or October Universal Orlando vacation should expect those shortened days at Universal Studios Florida.
The bigger surprise is what happens next door.
Islands of Adventure isn’t picking up the slack with particularly late operating hours. Instead, the park is scheduled to close at 8:00 p.m. through much of September. There are even a couple of dates with 7:00 p.m. closings.
Then there’s September 23.
On that date, Islands of Adventure is scheduled to close at just 6:00 p.m.
And Universal’s newest theme park isn’t necessarily providing a late-night alternative, either. Epic Universe is scheduled to close at 8:00 p.m. on most nights during September.
For a resort that increasingly wants guests to view it as a full vacation destination capable of competing directly with Walt Disney World, those hours are difficult to ignore.
Halloween Horror Nights Already Cuts Into Universal Studios Florida
Halloween Horror Nights is one of Universal Orlando’s biggest annual events, and the logistics behind it are understandable.
Universal Studios Florida needs time to transition from daytime operations into Halloween Horror Nights. That means clearing daytime guests from the park, preparing scare zones, getting haunted houses ready, and handling the enormous crowds that arrive for the nighttime event.
As a result, Universal Studios Florida closes at 5:00 p.m. on Halloween Horror Nights evenings.
Guests with regular daytime tickets can’t simply remain inside the park for the night. Halloween Horror Nights requires separate admission.
That’s been part of visiting Universal Orlando during Halloween season for years.
But it also makes the operating schedules at Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe much more important.
If one of Universal Orlando’s major theme parks closes at 5:00 p.m., guests who aren’t attending Halloween Horror Nights need somewhere else to spend their evening.
An 8:00 p.m. closing at the neighboring parks doesn’t leave much room.
Islands of Adventure Is Closing Surprisingly Early
Islands of Adventure will close at 8:00 p.m. during most of September.
That’s already fairly early for guests who want a full evening inside the park, particularly considering Florida’s sunset times during this part of the year.
But some dates are even shorter.
A couple of September evenings have Islands of Adventure closing at 7:00 p.m. The most noticeable date comes on September 23, when the park is scheduled to close at only 6:00 p.m.
Six o’clock.
For guests spending thousands of dollars on a Universal Orlando vacation, that’s an extremely early ending to a theme park day.
It becomes especially noticeable when Universal Studios Florida is also operating on a shortened schedule because of Halloween Horror Nights.
Families who don’t purchase Halloween Horror Nights tickets could suddenly find themselves with far fewer nighttime park hours than they might have expected.
And nighttime is a major part of the theme park experience.
There’s something different about walking through Jurassic Park after sunset or seeing Hogwarts Castle illuminated against the night sky. Attractions can feel completely different after dark, particularly outdoor rides such as Jurassic World VelociCoaster and Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure.
When Islands of Adventure closes at 7:00 or 8:00 p.m., opportunities to experience those attractions well after sunset become much more limited.
A 6:00 p.m. closing essentially eliminates that opportunity altogether.
Even Epic Universe Isn’t Staying Open Very Late
Epic Universe might seem like the obvious solution.
Universal Orlando’s newest theme park opened in May 2025 and dramatically expanded the resort. It gave Universal a third major theme park and strengthened the company’s argument that visitors can build an entire Orlando vacation around Universal.
Yet Epic Universe isn’t regularly staying open deep into the night during September, either.
The park is scheduled to close at 8:00 p.m. on most nights throughout the month.
That’s particularly disappointing for a park that arguably becomes even more impressive after sunset.
Epic Universe was designed with nighttime visuals playing an important role in the atmosphere. The portals, lighting, fountains and individual lands take on a different appearance once darkness arrives.
Guests naturally want time to experience that.
An 8:00 p.m. closing can make that difficult, especially earlier in September when darkness doesn’t arrive particularly early.
Visitors may only get a relatively small window to experience the park fully illuminated before they’re heading toward the exits.
That’s a strange situation for Universal’s newest theme park.
The Disney Comparison Is Hard To Avoid
Universal Orlando has spent years positioning itself as an increasingly serious competitor to Walt Disney World.
Epic Universe took that competition to another level.
Universal now has Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe alongside its water park, hotels and CityWalk entertainment district. It has become much easier to spend several days at Universal without feeling like you’re simply taking a short break from a Disney vacation.
But competing with Disney involves more than building new attractions and theme parks.
Operating hours matter, too.
Magic Kingdom has its own separately ticketed Halloween event with Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. On party nights, regular Magic Kingdom guests have to leave the park earlier than they would on a normal operating day.
The difference is that Walt Disney World still has three other theme parks.
EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios don’t routinely start shutting down at 7:00 p.m. simply because Magic Kingdom is hosting its Halloween event.
Guests who don’t have party tickets can spend their evening elsewhere.
That’s where Universal’s September schedule becomes harder to defend.
If Universal Studios Florida closes at 5:00 p.m. for Halloween Horror Nights and Islands of Adventure closes at 8:00 p.m., regular guests have only three additional hours at the neighboring park.
If Islands of Adventure closes at 7:00 p.m., that window becomes two hours.
On September 23, a 6:00 p.m. closing leaves almost no evening at all.
Epic Universe helps provide another option, but an 8:00 p.m. closing there still doesn’t exactly create a long night for vacationers.
Theme Park Hours Are Part of What Guests Pay For
Theme park tickets aren’t cheap, and neither are Orlando vacations.
Guests aren’t only paying for access to individual rides. They’re paying for an entire day of entertainment.
Operating hours directly affect that value.
A guest entering Islands of Adventure at 9:00 a.m. and staying until 10:00 p.m. has considerably more flexibility than someone visiting on a day when the park shuts down at 7:00 p.m.
Longer hours also help distribute crowds.
When guests know they have until 9:00, 10:00 or 11:00 p.m., they don’t necessarily feel pressure to accomplish everything during the afternoon. Families can return to their hotel, eat dinner, relax and come back later.
Earlier closings compress everyone’s plans into a smaller window.
That matters even more during Halloween Horror Nights season because Universal Studios Florida is already unavailable to regular guests during the evening.
Nobody expects Universal Studios Florida to remain open normally while Halloween Horror Nights is underway. The event is enormously popular and has become a defining part of Universal Orlando’s fall season.
But that makes longer hours at Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe more important, not less.
Universal Orlando Should Be Offering More
Universal Orlando has never had a stronger theme park lineup.
Epic Universe has transformed the resort. Islands of Adventure remains home to some of Universal’s best attractions, and Universal Studios Florida becomes one of Orlando’s biggest nighttime destinations when Halloween Horror Nights begins.
The resort wants visitors to stay longer, book Universal hotels and treat the property as a destination rather than an add-on.
Its operating hours should reflect that ambition.
Closing Islands of Adventure at 8:00 p.m. for most of September already feels early. Closing it at 7:00 p.m. is tougher to accept.
Closing at 6:00 p.m. on September 23 is another matter entirely.
And having Epic Universe regularly close at 8:00 p.m. doesn’t provide much relief.
Universal doesn’t need every park open until midnight every night. Attendance levels, staffing, special events and operational needs obviously play roles in determining park hours.
Still, there should be a reasonable expectation that guests spending an entire vacation at Universal Orlando can enjoy its theme parks well into the evening.
That’s especially true during Halloween Horror Nights season, when Universal already knows one of its parks will become unavailable to regular daytime visitors at 5:00 p.m.
If Universal Orlando wants to continue closing the gap with Walt Disney World, this is one area where it has room to improve.
Building world-class attractions is one thing.
Giving guests enough time to enjoy them is another.
