The period from roughly mid-August through mid-October tends to bring increased concern about tropical storms and hurricanes, with September typically sitting near the heart of that activity. For guests arriving over the next several weeks, watching the tropics can suddenly become just as important as checking park hours.
The good news is that Disney has policies in place when hurricanes threaten vacations. The catch is that they don’t necessarily protect every dollar you’ve spent.
From potentially losing a hotel discount to rules that can apply when a hurricane threatens your hometown, here are five things September Disney World guests should know.
1. Guests Could Lose Their Original Disney Discount
Finding a good Disney World hotel deal can make a September vacation much more affordable. Unfortunately, that deal isn’t necessarily guaranteed if the weather forces you to change your dates.
Guests who rebook their vacations may discover that their original promotional rate isn’t available for the new travel period.
Cast Members will try to find another applicable offer, but there’s no guarantee an equivalent discount will be available. If your replacement dates cost more, you’re responsible for paying the difference.
That makes this an important consideration before moving a September trip. You may be able to rebook without Disney charging a change fee, but that doesn’t necessarily mean your replacement vacation will cost the same amount.
2. September Vacation Payments Can Transfer
If you decide to move your September trip, you won’t necessarily have to start your vacation payments from scratch.
For qualifying reservations, payments already made to Disney for rooms, theme park tickets, and other Disney products and services will be applied toward the new reservation.
However, Disney’s standard hurricane policy does not apply to all types of reservations. Disney notes that certain special events and experiences may be excluded, while group-related reservations can have separate policies and procedures.
Guests traveling to Disney World in September as part of a group, meeting, convention, or special event should contact their Disney representative or event manager to determine which options are available if severe weather affects their trip.
3. A Hurricane Near Your Home Could Affect Your Disney Trip
September guests don’t necessarily have to wait for a hurricane to threaten Orlando for Disney’s hurricane policy to become relevant.
If the National Hurricane Center issues a hurricane warning for the Orlando area within seven days of your scheduled arrival, eligible guests can cancel or reschedule qualifying Disney Resort hotel packages and most room-only reservations booked directly through Disney without Disney imposing cancellation or change fees.
But there’s another important part of that policy: It can also apply to your place of residence.
For example, a family traveling from North Carolina could qualify if a hurricane warning is issued for their home area within 7 days of their arrival at Disney World, even if Orlando isn’t under the same warning.
Disney also allows most qualifying room-only reservations and vacation packages to be modified or canceled online, including changes to travel dates.
However, this protection applies to qualifying reservations booked directly through Disney. Airlines, rental car companies, third-party reservation services, travel agencies, and other companies have their own policies.
That’s particularly important for September travelers who may have several separately booked pieces of their vacation to rearrange.
4. Ticket Refund Policies
Walt Disney World doesn’t close frequently because of weather, but tropical storms and hurricanes can occasionally force the resort to suspend operations.
When that happens, guests shouldn’t automatically expect Disney to issue full refunds for their theme park tickets.
Partially used multi-day tickets may receive a limited extension, allowing guests additional time to use their remaining admission days. Completely unused tickets may instead receive a new start date.
A full ticket refund is less likely.
If severe September weather affects multiple park days, guests should contact Disney to determine exactly which options are available for their tickets, rather than assuming that a closure automatically triggers a refund.
5. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Has Different Rules
September also brings another complication that guests visiting during other parts of hurricane season may not encounter.
Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party takes place on select nights at Magic Kingdom, and those separately ticketed events can be affected when tropical weather approaches Central Florida.
Disney generally handles hurricane-related issues involving special-event tickets on a case-by-case basis. Guests may be offered another event date, ticket credit, or, depending on the circumstances, a refund.
There is also precedent for Disney refunding guests when it cancels a party entirely.
In September 2024, Disney canceled a Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party due to Hurricane Helene and issued refunds to affected guests.
Anyone attending a September 2026 Halloween party should keep a close eye on Disney’s operational announcements if tropical weather develops.
September Guests Should Prepare
Booking a Disney World vacation in September doesn’t mean a hurricane will disrupt your trip. Thousands of guests will visit this month without encountering a major tropical system.
Still, September travelers have more reason than most to understand Disney’s policies before leaving home.
Know which reservations you booked directly through Disney, review the policies for your airline and rental car company, and keep your reservation information easily accessible.
Most importantly, remember that Disney’s hurricane protections can kick in when a warning affects Orlando or your place of residence within seven days of arrival. Knowing your options ahead of time can make a stressful September forecast much easier to manage.
