Guests visiting Walt Disney World on Sunday found themselves in the middle of an intense Florida thunderstorm that brought lightning dangerously close to some of the most recognizable locations at Magic Kingdom.
Afternoon thunderstorms aren’t unusual in Central Florida, particularly during the summer. Still, this storm appeared to deliver an especially dramatic experience for guests who were inside the park when it moved through the area.

According to one park visitor, lightning struck near multiple locations around Magic Kingdom, including the back of Tiana’s Bayou General, Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor, the central hub, and several areas around Seven Seas Lagoon.
The guest described it as possibly the “craziest thunderstorm” they had ever experienced.
Considering where some of those reported strikes occurred, it’s easy to understand why.
Powerful Thunderstorm Moves Over Magic Kingdom
Florida’s weather can change incredibly quickly.
Guests can enter Magic Kingdom beneath sunshine and blue skies only to find themselves searching for shelter when dark clouds move over Walt Disney World later in the day. Heavy rain, thunder, and lightning can transform an afternoon at the park in a matter of minutes.
That appears to be what happened on August 23.
The report came from X user @CoasterK24, who frequently visits Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort and posts updates from the parks. The account shared its experience shortly after the storm moved through Magic Kingdom.

This wasn’t simply a case of guests seeing lightning somewhere off in the distance.
The visitor reported lightning strikes at several locations around Magic Kingdom and the surrounding resort area.
Among the locations named was the back of Tiana’s Bayou General in Frontierland. The shop sits near Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and the developing area surrounding that portion of Magic Kingdom.
Another reported strike occurred around Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor in Tomorrowland.
Perhaps even more striking was the report that lightning hit around the hub, placing some of the storm’s activity near the heart of Magic Kingdom.
The hub serves as the central point immediately in front of Cinderella Castle, with pathways branching toward the park’s different lands. It’s also an area that can become extremely crowded throughout the day.
Beyond Magic Kingdom itself, the guest reported several strikes around Seven Seas Lagoon.
For anyone caught outside during the storm, the combination would have been difficult to ignore.
Guests Take Shelter as Lightning Hits Nearby
The severity of the thunderstorm also became apparent in the conversation that followed the original post.
One person reminded the guest of a familiar Florida weather rule: when thunder can be heard, people should move indoors.
The park visitor confirmed that they did shelter for a period during the storm.
That is an important part of navigating Walt Disney World during severe summer weather.

A storm doesn’t necessarily have to last all afternoon to significantly affect a visit. Lightning in the area can create an immediate reason for guests to head indoors, while heavy rain can quickly leave outdoor walkways soaked.
Magic Kingdom does have plenty of indoor spaces where visitors can escape the elements. Restaurants, stores, indoor attractions, and covered areas can become particularly valuable when one of these storms arrives.
However, the location of the reported lightning strikes made Sunday’s storm particularly noteworthy.
Tiana’s Bayou General sits on one side of the park. Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor is located across Magic Kingdom in Tomorrowland. The hub occupies the center of the park, while Seven Seas Lagoon extends beyond the park’s entrance.
Taken together, the reports suggest lightning activity wasn’t confined to one small corner of the resort.
It was happening across a much broader area.
Seven Seas Lagoon Also Takes Multiple Strikes
The reported lightning around Seven Seas Lagoon is another important piece of what made this thunderstorm so dramatic.
The lagoon is a major part of the Magic Kingdom resort area. Guests traveling between the park and nearby resorts regularly move around or across the water using different forms of Disney transportation.
The original post reported lightning hitting several spots around the lagoon during the same storm that produced the strikes around Magic Kingdom.

Another person responding to the post recalled previously waiting out a storm inside Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort when lightning hit one of the lightning rods. That guest remembered the strike being exceptionally loud.
Those sudden, close strikes can make a Florida thunderstorm feel very different from simply watching lightning flash far away on the horizon.
When lightning occurs close to buildings and populated areas, the resulting thunder can be startlingly loud.
For guests already dealing with pouring rain and changing park conditions, a series of nearby strikes can turn an ordinary Disney afternoon into something they remember for years.
Severe Weather Can Quickly Change a Disney World Day
The storm also serves as another example of why weather remains one of the most unpredictable parts of a Walt Disney World vacation.
Guests can plan dining reservations, attraction priorities, Lightning Lane selections, and park-hopping schedules months before arriving.
They can’t control the weather.
Central Florida thunderstorms can develop rapidly, and lightning can affect how guests move through the parks when conditions deteriorate.

One former EPCOT worker responding to the post said lightning would frequently strike poles around the lake near the park’s entrance. The former Cast Member connected those conditions with outdoor carts and shops closing when lightning approaches.
For guests, that means the safest response to a major storm may also require changing plans at a moment’s notice.
Rather than attempting to push through severe weather to reach the next attraction, finding an indoor location can provide a chance to wait for conditions to improve.
Sunday’s thunderstorm provided a dramatic reminder of just how quickly those conditions can change.
Lightning Strikes Multiple Magic Kingdom Locations
There was no indication in the provided report that the strikes caused injuries or significant damage.
Still, reports of lightning hitting around Tiana’s Bayou General, Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor, the Magic Kingdom hub, and several spots around Seven Seas Lagoon made this particular storm stand out from the typical afternoon rain shower.
The original post had already accumulated more than 15,000 views shortly after being published, suggesting plenty of people took notice of what happened.

For guests inside Magic Kingdom, though, this wasn’t something they were watching unfold from home.
They were experiencing it.
A day at Walt Disney World can include almost anything, from unexpected attraction closures to changing crowds and sudden rainstorms. But having lightning reportedly strike multiple recognizable locations around Magic Kingdom within the same thunderstorm is a considerably more dramatic experience.
Florida’s summer weather will always be part of visiting Walt Disney World.
Most thunderstorms eventually pass, the rain clears, and guests continue their day.
This one, however, gave visitors a particularly powerful demonstration of what Central Florida weather can do. With lightning reported around multiple areas of Magic Kingdom and Seven Seas Lagoon, August 23 delivered much more than an ordinary rainy afternoon at the Most Magical Place on Earth.
