Credit: LucasfilmRey Skywalker’s journey to rebuild the Jedi Order was supposed to mark the beginning of a new era for Star Wars. However, years after Daisy Ridley’s return was announced, her untitled solo movie seemingly remains stuck in development.
Now, as Lucasfilm launches another adventure centered around a female Jedi attempting to restore the Order, fans are getting a story that sounds surprisingly familiar.
The Ninth Jedi Replaces “The Last Jedi”
Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi arrives on Disney+ today, August 5, continuing the story of Lah Kara, the young Jedi introduced in the original Star Wars: Visions episode of the same name in 2021.
The anime series follows Lah Kara as she searches for worthy Jedi to join her cause while facing threats in a galaxy where the Jedi Order has fallen. Her story previously continued in the Visions Volume 3 short “Child of Hope,” which expanded on her journey before the new Disney+ series.
Parallels With Rey’s Solo Star Wars Project
Interestingly, the premise shares a striking similarity with Rey’s planned solo movie.
Following the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019), Rey is expected to return as a Jedi Master attempting to rebuild the Jedi Order and establish a new future for the galaxy.
While both projects focus on female Jedi trying to restore what was lost, their stories exist in very different corners of the franchise. Unlike Rey’s story, The Ninth Jedi takes place outside official Star Wars canon, giving Lucasfilm the freedom to explore a completely original mythology.
And where Rey’s film is said to take place 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker (2019), The Ninth Jedi is set in the distant future, long after the events of the sequel trilogy.

The comparison is especially interesting because Rey’s movie has been in development for several years, with updates remaining limited. Meanwhile, The Ninth Jedi has already expanded from a popular animated short into a full Disney+ series.
For now, the next theatrical Star Wars movie is Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling. While Daisy Ridley’s Rey has been rumored to appear in the project, she is not currently part of the announced cast, and there’s no release date for her solo film.
As Lucasfilm continues exploring the future of the Jedi, The Ninth Jedi may offer fans an early look at the kind of rebuilding story they have been waiting to see from Rey’s next chapter.
