The Welsh television channel S4C recently announced that a Welsh-language version of Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), titled Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd, will premiere on Christmas Day 2026. Rather than using the original English dialogue, the production features an entirely new voice cast bringing the classic film to life for Welsh-speaking audiences.
Among the biggest casting announcements is Matthew Rhys, who will voice Han Solo. Known for his work in Widow’s Bay, Rhys officially becomes the newest actor to portray the legendary smuggler in an official Lucasfilm production.
That naturally raises plenty of questions. Ford’s original performance remains one of the defining aspects of the character, and fans will be curious to hear whether Rhys closely mirrors Ford’s delivery or puts his own spin on Han Solo. Either way, joining a franchise with nearly five decades of history is no small task.
Still, while this may feel like a major milestone, it’s far from the first time Lucasfilm has entrusted another actor with one of its most recognizable characters.
It’s Happened Before
Back in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), Lucasfilm introduced audiences to a younger version of Han Solo, with Alden Ehrenreich taking over the role from Harrison Ford.
