REPORT: Disney Is Changing the Ending of ‘Tangled’ for Reboot

It looks like Disney is making a slight change to the ending of its live-action Tangled (2010) reboot.

Disney’s live-action Tangled reboot was announced in December 2024. Teagan Croft is set to play Rapunzel opposite Milo Manheim’s Flynn Rider, with Marvel’s Kathryn Hahn cast as Mother Gothel and Star Wars actor Diego Luna joining in an undisclosed role. Michael Gracey, best known for The Greatest Showman (2017), is directing.

Production is well underway in Girona, Spain, where Disney is making good use of the city’s colorful medieval architecture. With filming taking place out in the open, we’ve already seen an unusual amount of footage from the film – including glimpses of the scene in which Corona’s young residents braid Rapunzel’s hair, Flynn’s theft of the lost princess’s royal crown, and the film’s ending.

Disney Seems To Make Small Change to ‘Tangled’ Ending

With so much footage from the set, we have a good idea of how certain scenes will play out.

When it comes to one of the final moments in Tangled – in which Rapunzel finally reunites with her parents after escaping Mother Gothel’s grasp for good – it looks like Disney is taking a slightly different approach.

Footage shows Rapunzel rushing to meet her parents, with the queen played by Outlander star Caitriona Balfe and the king portrayed by an actor currently unknown (who some have theorized will be Luna).

Unlike the animation, however, it looks like Rapunzel will introduce her parents to Flynn, rather than the royal couple randomly forcing Flynn to join their embrace.

It’s a small change, but one that some have hailed as proof that the live-action film will give Rapunzel more agency than the original animation. Other Disney remakes have taken similar approaches with their female leads. For example, Aladdin expanded Jasmine’s political ambitions, while Beauty and the Beast recast Belle as an inventor.

What Other Changes Has Disney Made?

This isn’t the only change fans have noted.

It looks like Disney has changed Corona’s colors from royal purple to blue for the live-action reboot (a tiny change that sparked major backlash regardless), while Rapunzel’s final haircut also looks slightly different from the animation.

Her dress, however, and Flynn Rider’s outfit are extremely similar to the animation.

Disney has faced backlash in the past when its remakes departed too sharply from the source. Mulan (2020) removed Mushu, Li Shang, and the original film’s songs, while Snow White (2025) rewrote the romance and replaced the animated dwarfs with photorealistic CGI characters.

But near-total fidelity has also drawn its own complaints.

The Lion King (2019) recreated the 1994 film almost scene for scene, but its realistic animals lacked the original characters’ expressions. Beauty and the Beast (2017) was similarly criticized for repeating familiar beats without enough new purpose, while this year’s reboot of Moana (2016) flopped at the box office amid complaints that it failed to improve upon the animation in any way.

Regardless, fans have expressed apprehensive optimism about the Tangled remake.
