The attraction has been closed since January with a scheduled return date of November 20, 2026, and the new aerial photos offer the most detailed public look yet at what Universal has been doing inside the walls.
The refurbishment appears to be a restoration rather than a replacement. The iconic opening sequence featuring the Ultrasaur, one of the attraction’s most recognizable moments, remains in place and the original Jurassic Park (1993) storyline appears to be preserved rather than being updated to reflect the newer Jurassic World films. When Universal Studios Hollywood refurbished its version of the ride, the classic opening was replaced with a massive Mosasaurus screen sequence from the newer films. The Islands of Adventure version appears to be taking a different approach.
The Ultrasaur is being rebuilt rather than simply repaired. Aerial photos show the familiar dinosaur exterior removed, exposing the internal mechanical framework, with a new white metal armature for the neck installed. Over the years the attraction’s opening dinosaur had developed a reputation for limited movement, with guests noting its neck appeared to be in a fixed or strained position. The baby Stegosaurus has also been receiving attention, with portions of its facial covering removed so crews could work on its moving components.
