Planning a vacation to Walt Disney World has always required a bit of strategy, but the recent shift from the old Genie+ setup to the revamped Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass systems has completely rewritten the playbook. On paper, the ability to pre-plan your ride reservations days in advance—7 days for Disney Resort hotel guests and 3 days for off-site visitors—sounds like a massive win for families who hated the 7:00 AM day-of stress.

However, when you apply this new framework to Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the math simply stops making sense. In fact, for this specific park, the standard Lightning Lane Multi Pass feels practically obsolete. Between a limited ride inventory and a pricing structure that splits the park’s absolute best attraction into an individual à la carte purchase, buying the Multi Pass here is a tough pill to swallow.
If you are trying to maximize your vacation budget, there is a much smarter way to handle your day at Animal Kingdom.
The Core Problem: A Glaring Lack of Ride Inventory
The underlying issue with buying the Multi Pass for Animal Kingdom comes down to basic math. The park is beautifully designed, massive in physical scale, and rich in atmosphere, but it is notoriously light on traditional rides.
Unlike Magic Kingdom or Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which boast deep lineups of high-demand thrill rides and dark rides, Animal Kingdom only offers a handful of experiences on the Multi Pass roster. Currently, the list includes:
Kali River Rapids (which is highly seasonal and weather-dependent)
Beyond these few heavy hitters, the rest of the Multi Pass system is padded out by stage shows and entertainment like Festival of the Lion King, Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!, Feathered Friends in Flight!, and the Zootopia: Better Zoogether! show.
While these shows are phenomenal and absolutely worth watching, they feature high-capacity theaters. Using a paid skip-the-line pass on a show where you can almost always walk right in 15 minutes before showtime is a poor use of money. Because Animal Kingdom lacks the depth of attractions found elsewhere, Disney didn’t even bother setting up a tiered system for it. You can pick any three attractions you want, but after you burn through the top two or three, there is very little left to reserve.
The Flight of Passage Catch
The absolute dealbreaker for the Multi Pass value proposition at Animal Kingdom is Avatar Flight of Passage. For the vast majority of guests, this breathtaking simulator is the number one reason to visit the park.
Under the current pricing architecture, Flight of Passage is completely excluded from the Multi Pass pool. Instead, it is classified as a Lightning Lane Single Pass. This means it is an à la carte, pay-per-ride option that you must purchase entirely on its own.

The Reality Check: You can spend your hard-earned money on a daily Multi Pass, but it will not help you bypass the line for the most popular ride in the entire park. To skip that multi-hour queue, you have to shell out additional cash for the Single Pass anyway.
When you look at it from that perspective, paying for both passes becomes an expensive exercise in diminishing returns. If you buy the Multi Pass, you are essentially paying a premium just to skip lines that are already entirely manageable using standard standby strategies.
The Smarter Alternative: Buy the Single Pass, Skip the Rest
Because of how the pricing is structured, the most economical and stress-free strategy for Animal Kingdom is to completely ignore the Multi Pass. Instead, simply buy the Lightning Lane Single Pass for Flight of Passage and rely on traditional standby lines for everything else.
Here is why this strategy works flawlessly for almost any day of the year:
Rope Dropping is Highly Effective: If you have access to Early Theme Park Entry by staying at a Disney resort, you can walk right onto Naʻvi River Journey or Kilimanjaro Safaris with virtually zero wait. Even regular day guests who arrive at park opening can knock out Expedition Everest and the safaris before the mid-day crowds peak.
Single Rider Lines Exist: If your party doesn’t mind being separated on the ride vehicle, Expedition Everestfeatures an incredibly efficient Single Rider line that bypasses the main queue for free.
The Afternoon Clears Out: Animal Kingdom historically empties out much earlier than the other three Walt Disney World parks. By 3:00 PM or 4:00 PM, wait times for major attractions drop significantly as families head back to their hotels or hop to other parks for the evening.

By skipping the Multi Pass and only purchasing the à la carte Single Pass for Flight of Passage, you guarantee access to the park’s longest line while saving a significant amount of money that can be reallocated to a nice meal, souvenirs, or a Multi Pass for a ride-heavy park like Magic Kingdom.
When Does the Multi Pass Actually Make Sense?
While the system is largely redundant for the average guest, there are a couple of specific scenarios where purchasing the Multi Pass at Animal Kingdom might still hold water:
1. Peak Holiday Crowds
During major holiday weeks—like Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Spring Break—the sheer volume of humans in the parks causes standby lines for every attraction to swell. On those specific days, even a 45-minute wait for Kali River Rapids or a packed house at the Festival of the Lion King might warrant having a skip-the-line pass.

2. The Park Hopper Advantage
If you plan to utilize a Park Hopper ticket, the value changes. Because you can make a new Multi Pass selection immediately after tapping into your first ride of the day, you could technically buy a Multi Pass for Animal Kingdom (which is often priced lower than Magic Kingdom or Hollywood Studios), enjoy a few short morning lines, and then use your smartphone to start stacking ride reservations for a second park later in the afternoon.
Final Thoughts
Disney’s shift to the advance-booking Lightning Lane model was intended to bring structure and predictability back to vacation planning. But for Animal Kingdom, the current pricing model has inadvertently exposed the system’s weaknesses, rendering the Multi Pass an unnecessary expense for the average visitor.
Save your money, master the park opening timeline, buy your Single Pass for Flight of Passage, and enjoy everything else Animal Kingdom has to offer without paying extra to skip lines that you don’t need to stand in anyway.
