While much of the attention has focused on Disney’s upcoming Piston Peak expansion, the ripple effects are spreading well beyond the project’s main construction zone. As Disney prepares for one of the park’s biggest additions in years, several familiar locations are quietly evolving alongside it.
Guests have already watched beloved attractions disappear, and major construction has reshaped the landscape. Now, another longtime corner of the park is receiving a noticeable update that hints at how Disney plans to connect its newest land with one of Magic Kingdom’s oldest and most beloved attractions.
Piston Peak Will Completely Change This Corner of Magic Kingdom
Piston Peak is set to become one of the largest changes Magic Kingdom has seen in decades. Inspired by the national park setting introduced in Pixar’s Cars universe, the new land will replace the former Rivers of America with forests, mountains, waterfalls, rocky landscapes, and wilderness-themed architecture.
Disney says the expansion will feel like a scenic national park instead of simply recreating Radiator Springs. Instead of copying locations directly from the films, the company is building an original destination that captures the spirit of America’s great outdoor landscapes while weaving familiar Cars characters into the experience. The result is expected to feel both recognizable and entirely new for guests.
That approach means nearby areas also need to blend naturally into the new setting, and construction is already reflecting that goal. Rather than treating Piston Peak as a standalone expansion, Disney appears to be making adjustments throughout the surrounding area so the transition between lands feels more seamless once the project is complete.
Haunted Mansion’s Neighbor Is Getting a New Look
One of the most noticeable projects is happening beside The Haunted Mansion.
The building, marked by its tower with a sloped, peaked roof, once served as part of the attraction’s extended queue before construction walls went up months ago. After the Mike Fink Keel Boats dock was demolished, they installed a steel framework behind the structure, then covered it with plywood and sheathing.
Now, most of the additions feature fresh yellow exterior paneling with white window shutters. The new siding differs from the building’s original blue-gray exterior but closely matches the shingles on the nearby tower, helping create a more unified appearance.
Disney hasn’t revealed what the expanded building will eventually become, though the work likely connects to a permit filed earlier this year involving MLC Theming. Inside the queue, construction walls recently came down in the graveyard, revealing rearranged gravestones.
The Haunted Mansion Is Also Being Refreshed
The attraction itself has also spent months receiving exterior updates while remaining open.
Large themed scrims that resembled the mansion previously covered portions of the building during construction. Most have now been removed, although work continues on sections of the queue and nearby walkways, where wooden boards still cover portions of the ground as overnight construction proceeds.
Combined with the work next door, Disney is clearly investing in the entire area surrounding the attraction.
Piston Peak Has Already Changed Magic Kingdom
The Haunted Mansion isn’t the only place feeling the effects of the expansion.
The Rivers of America has been drained, Tom Sawyer Island has permanently closed, and the Liberty Square Riverboat has ended operations to make way for Piston Peak. Together, those closures have dramatically reshaped one of Magic Kingdom’s most recognizable sections as crews prepare for years of construction.
More Changes May Still Be Ahead
Disney has only confirmed the projects currently underway, but it wouldn’t be surprising if additional updates eventually reached the area surrounding The Haunted Mansion.
The company has increasingly modernized and rethemed existing spaces across Walt Disney World. As Piston Peak continues taking shape, Disney could further update nearby pathways, queue spaces, and supporting buildings to better connect the park’s newest land with one of its oldest attractions.
For now, Disney hasn’t announced anything beyond the current work, but this remains one of the most interesting construction zones to watch.
