Disney Just Filled an Important Role That’s Been Abandoned Since Last Fall

There is a particular kind of quiet that settles over a section of a theme park when something genuinely meaningful happens, something that has nothing to do with a new ride or a flashy announcement. That happened at Disney’s Animal Kingdom last fall, when guests learned that Gino, the longtime silverback who had called the park home since its earliest days, had passed away. For nearly thirty years, Gino had been the steady, familiar presence at the heart of the gorilla habitat, and his absence left a void that fans and cast members alike felt deeply. Now, Animal Kingdom has welcomed a new leader to carry that legacy forward.

Disney has introduced Bakari, a male western lowland gorilla, as the new silverback of the gorilla troop at Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail in the park’s Africa section.

Who Bakari Is, and Where He Came From

Bakari is 21 years old and arrived at Animal Kingdom from the Saint Louis Zoo, which announced his move on June 25. He was originally born at Brookfield Zoo back in 2005 before relocating to Saint Louis in 2011, where he spent years living in a bachelor troop at the zoo’s Jungle of the Apes.

That bachelor troop setup plays an important role in preparing young silverbacks for eventual leadership. According to the Saint Louis Zoo, these groups give adult males the chance to develop the social skills needed to one day lead a family group of their own, mirroring how gorillas naturally live in the wild, where silverbacks and young males often travel together before eventually joining a breeding troop.

Bakari’s move to Florida came through a breeding recommendation under the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Western Lowland Gorilla Species Survival Plan, a coordinated conservation program designed to maintain a genetically healthy population of the subspecies across accredited zoos throughout North America. Western lowland gorillas remain the most common of the four gorilla subspecies, but they are still classified as critically endangered, making programs like this one essential to the species’ long-term survival. Bakari’s new role at Animal Kingdom directly supports that broader conservation effort.

Why This Moment Means So Much After Losing Gino

To fully understand why Bakari’s arrival matters so much to longtime Animal Kingdom visitors, it helps to look back at what the park lost last September. Gino, the troop’s silverback for nearly thirty years, passed away at age 44, just months before what would have been his forty-fifth birthday. Over his decades at the park, he fathered fourteen offspring and became one of the most recognizable, beloved figures in Animal Kingdom’s history.

Disney rarely issues public statements when an animal passes away, but the company made an exception for Gino, a clear sign of just how significant his presence had been since the park’s opening days. Even former Imagineer Joe Rohde, who helped design Animal Kingdom itself, publicly honored Gino following his passing, reflecting how deeply his loss was felt not just among guests, but among the very people who helped build the habitat he called home.

For nearly three decades, guests returning to Animal Kingdom found themselves drawn to that same shaded stretch of trail, watching Gino interact with his troop, care for his offspring, or simply rest in the sun. Those quiet, unscripted moments became some of the most memorable parts of an Animal Kingdom visit for countless families, offering something the rest of the park’s thrill rides and entertainment simply could not replicate.

Gino’s death left the troop without a leader, creating a gap that needed to be filled both for the wellbeing of the existing gorilla family and for the broader conservation goals tied to the species survival program.

What Guests Can Expect Now at Disney

With Bakari now settling into his new role, guests visiting Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail have a real chance to witness the next chapter of Animal Kingdom’s gorilla family unfold. Disney has noted that sightings are not guaranteed on any given visit, since Bakari’s appearances along the trail will vary day to day, but guests are encouraged to keep an eye out as he establishes himself within the troop.

For longtime fans who grew up watching Gino lead his family group, Bakari’s arrival offers a meaningful sense of continuity. While no new silverback can replace the decades of history Gino built at the park, his legacy lives on both through his fourteen offspring and through the conservation work that ultimately brought Bakari to Florida in the first place.

For guests planning a trip to Animal Kingdom, a stop at Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail offers more than just another animal encounter. It offers a chance to witness the next generation of a story that has quietly anchored the park since its earliest days, now carried forward by a new silverback stepping into a role nearly thirty years in the making.
