For many travelers booking a Caribbean vacation aboard a Disney Cruise Line ship, the experience is designed to feel seamless from the moment they board. Days at sea blend into tropical island stops, family entertainment, beachside relaxation, and private destinations that have become major selling points for Disney’s growing cruise business. Whether guests are sailing aboard the Disney Wish or the Disney Fantasy, visits to Disney’s exclusive Bahamian ports are often among the most anticipated parts of the itinerary.

But guests scheduled to visit Disney’s island destinations in the coming days may notice something unusually absent from the experience.

Alcohol sales are expected to be temporarily prohibited at both Disney Castaway Cay and Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point for one day next week due to a nationwide election-related restriction taking place across The Bahamas.

While the temporary policy does not affect onboard operations, it could still alter the experience for some guests spending the day ashore.

The restriction is tied to The Bahamas’ upcoming general election and is expected to remain in effect on Tuesday, May 12, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time while polls are open.

Under Bahamian law, the sale of what officials describe as “intoxicating liquor” is prohibited during election hours. Because Disney’s private island destinations operate within Bahamian territory and jurisdiction, the policy is expected to apply there as well.

That means guests visiting Castaway Cay or Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point during the restricted timeframe may temporarily lose access to alcoholic beverages sold on the islands themselves.

The unusual policy effectively creates a temporary “dry day” across large portions of the country, including cruise line-operated private destinations.

Disney Is Not the Only Cruise Line Affected

Although Disney Cruise Line guests are directly impacted, the temporary restriction extends far beyond Disney’s operations.

Several other cruise lines also operate private destinations throughout The Bahamas, including Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, and MSC Cruises.

Private cruise ports potentially affected include Great Stirrup Cay, Celebration Key, and Ocean Cay, all of which fall under Bahamian governance during the election period.

So far, Disney has not publicly issued a formal statement regarding the restriction. However, Royal Caribbean acknowledged the temporary policy in comments surrounding the election-related ban, stating:

“Royal Caribbean is respecting and complying with all local laws and regulations, as we do with every destination we visit.”

The cruise company also clarified that alcohol service onboard its ships would continue operating normally, with the restriction applying only to onshore sales.

At this time, Disney Cruise Line operations onboard its ships are also expected to continue as usual.

Which Disney Cruise Ships Could Be Affected?

Based on current sailing schedules, two Disney Cruise Line vessels appear likely to be impacted by the temporary alcohol restriction on May 12.

The Disney Wish is expected to dock at Castaway Cay, while the Disney Fantasy is scheduled to visit Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

Guests visiting either destination during election hours may encounter limited beverage options while ashore.

Importantly, current information suggests the restriction only applies to alcohol sales on the islands themselves. Bars, lounges, and beverage service onboard the ships are still expected to function normally before and after port visits.

For many travelers, the impact may ultimately be relatively minor. However, for guests specifically planning beachside drink packages, tropical cocktails, or adult-focused island experiences, the temporary restriction could slightly alter expectations for the day.

Why This Could Affect a Disney Vacation

For many Disney Cruise Line passengers, private island stops are marketed as premium vacation experiences that combine Disney entertainment with all-inclusive resort-style relaxation. Adult guests often build portions of their cruise plans around beach bars, specialty drinks, and relaxing island atmospheres that feel distinct from the ship itself.

A temporary alcohol ban, even one lasting only several hours, can noticeably change the tone of a port day for some travelers.

Families traveling with adults who planned to spend the day at Serenity Bay, Castaway Cay’s adults-only beach, may particularly notice the difference during the restricted window. Similarly, guests exploring Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point for the first time may experience a more limited version of the destination than originally expected.

For travelers already balancing expensive airfare, cruise costs, and tightly planned itineraries, unexpected restrictions can occasionally create frustration, especially when guests were unaware of local election laws before departure.

That said, because onboard operations are expected to continue normally, Disney passengers will still have access to the vast majority of onboard dining, entertainment, and beverage offerings throughout the rest of the sailing.

Rare Restrictions Like This Are Uncommon

Election-related alcohol bans are not unique to The Bahamas, but they are relatively uncommon in the cruise industry, especially for travelers unfamiliar with local regulations in the destinations they visit.

Cruise itineraries often cross multiple international jurisdictions, meaning local laws can occasionally influence onboard or shore-based experiences in ways guests do not anticipate ahead of time.

In this case, the restriction appears temporary and procedural rather than operational or safety-related.

Still, it creates an unusual situation for Disney Cruise Line passengers visiting what are typically marketed as carefree tropical escape destinations.

Guests Sailing This Week Should Plan Ahead

Travelers scheduled to visit Castaway Cay or Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point on May 12 may want to prepare for the temporary restriction in advance, particularly if they planned to purchase alcoholic beverages while ashore.

While the limitation is expected to last only during election hours, it may still affect beach plans, dining expectations, or adult-focused relaxation experiences throughout much of the day.

For most guests, though, the overall Disney Cruise Line vacation experience should continue largely unchanged.

If you are sailing aboard the Disney Wish or Disney Fantasy this week, it may be worth adjusting expectations slightly for your island day. And if you are already onboard, you may want to grab that tropical drink before heading ashore.
