Universal Orlando Resort has spent the last several years turning The Wizarding World of Harry Potter into one of the biggest draws in theme park history. Guests travel from around the world just to sip Butterbeer, walk through Hogsmeade, cast spells with interactive wands, and ride some of the most advanced attractions ever built inside a theme park. But one major Harry Potter experience has quietly struggled behind the scenes, and the pattern is becoming harder to ignore.
Over the past year, the attraction has experienced repeated closures, delayed openings, and technical downtime, frustrating guests trying to move between parks. While occasional maintenance is normal for large attractions, the frequency of these interruptions has raised questions about whether larger reliability problems are developing. Based on how things are trending so far in 2026, the situation may not improve anytime soon.
The Wizarding World Has Become the Heart of Universal Orlando
Universal Orlando now operates three separate Harry Potter-themed areas spread across its parks, and together they form one of the most ambitious themed entertainment projects ever created.
At Universal Islands of Adventure, guests can step directly into Hogsmeade Village. Snow-capped rooftops, roaming Hogwarts students, and the towering Hogwarts Castle make the land feel almost identical to what fans saw in the films. This side of the resort is also home to Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, which continues to rank as one of the most popular roller coasters in Florida.
Next door at Universal Studios Florida, guests enter Diagon Alley through a hidden brick wall entrance inspired by the movies. The area features shops like Ollivanders, Knockturn Alley, and Harry Potter and the Escape From Gringotts. Universal designed the land to feel completely different from Hogsmeade, giving guests the sense that they are exploring another side of the Wizarding World.
Now, with Epic Universe in the mix, Universal has expanded the franchise yet again with a new land inspired by the Ministry of Magic. The addition gives the resort an even larger Harry Potter footprint and turns the franchise into a true multi-park experience.

Hogwarts Express Connects Two Entire Parks
The Hogwarts Express is not just transportation. Universal built the attraction as a full experience that guests actively plan around during their vacations.
The train connects Hogsmeade Station inside Islands of Adventure with King’s Cross Station inside Universal Studios Florida. Guests board a themed train car modeled after the iconic locomotive from the films, then watch special effects sequences play out outside the windows during the ride.
Depending on which direction guests travel, they see different scenes and story elements. The experience feels immersive from start to finish, especially when guests walk through the recreated King’s Cross Station and pass through the famous Platform 9¾ effect.
For many visitors, riding the train becomes part of the Harry Potter experience itself rather than simply a way to move between parks. It also provides a convenient alternative to walking through CityWalk.
That convenience, however, has become increasingly unreliable.

The Attraction Has Spent a Surprising Amount of Time Closed
In the last year alone, the Hogwarts Express has undergone three maintenance closures in May, September, and December. Combined with its February 2026 refurbishment, the attraction has now been unavailable to guests for a considerable period.
And those scheduled refurbishments only tell part of the story.
Throughout its normal operating schedule, the attraction has repeatedly experienced technical issues that disrupt service during the day. Delayed openings have become increasingly common, especially during morning park operations when crowds are trying to move quickly between parks.
Guests have also dealt with unexpected mid-day shutdowns that temporarily halt train service entirely. In some cases, visitors arrive at the station only to discover that the attraction is not operating.
That can create major problems for guests who rely on the train to make the most of their day. Since park-to-park tickets are specifically marketed around the Hogwarts Express experience, downtime can quickly throw off carefully planned itineraries.

Guests Should Prepare for More Issues Throughout 2026
At this point, guests visiting Universal Orlando Resort for the remainder of 2026 probably should not rely entirely on Hogwarts Express when planning their day.
Universal Orlando has not officially announced another refurbishment for the attraction yet. Still, if technical problems continue to pile up, it would not be surprising to see another extended closure added to the calendar.
The pattern from 2025 alone already suggests that the attraction requires frequent maintenance. Three separate refurbishment periods in a single year is a significant amount for any theme park attraction, especially one that functions as a transportation system between parks.
If operational issues persist throughout 2026, Universal may eventually decide that a longer shutdown is necessary to stabilize the experience and fully address recurring technical concerns.
For guests planning vacations, that means flexibility will be important. Trying to build an entire park-hopping strategy around the train could become risky, especially during busy travel periods when downtime creates even larger crowds around the stations.

There Are Still Plenty of Ways To Enjoy the Wizarding World
Fortunately, guests still have plenty of options even if Hogwarts Express experiences downtime during their trip.
Walking between Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida remains relatively simple through CityWalk. While it takes longer than riding the train, the pathway still allows guests to experience both parks in the same day.
And the Wizarding World itself continues offering some of Universal Orlando Resort’s best attractions.
Harry Potter and the Escape From Gringotts remains one of the resort’s most ambitious dark rides, combining screens, physical sets, and coaster elements into one experience. Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure still pulls massive wait times thanks to its launches, storytelling, and unique ride system.
Meanwhile, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey continues operating inside Hogwarts Castle.

Trouble on the Hogwarts Express
Universal Orlando Resort built The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to feel like a single, interconnected universe spanning multiple parks. Hogwarts Express plays a huge role in making that illusion work, which is why its growing reliability issues have become more noticeable over time.
Between repeated refurbishments, delayed openings, and mid-day technical problems, the attraction has spent a surprising amount of time unavailable over the past year. And while Universal has not yet confirmed any additional closures, the attraction’s history suggests guests should remain prepared for further interruptions throughout 2026.
For now, the train remains one of the most unique attractions at Universal Orlando Resort. But until its operational consistency improves, guests may want to keep a backup plan ready whenever they plan to travel between parks.
