For the students of the Ashland High School Marching Band from Ashland, Ohio, the spring of 2026 was supposed to be the pinnacle of their high school careers. After four years of relentless fundraising, countless car washes, and hundreds of hours of rehearsal, the “Ashland Arrows” finally embarked on their long-awaited 1,000-mile journey to Central Florida. Their destination? Walt Disney World Resort, where they were scheduled to march down Main Street, U.S.A., in the shadow of Cinderella Castle.

But on the morning of Sunday, March 29, the dream took a devastating turn. In a brazen act of theft that has left the Ashland community in shock, the band discovered that their equipment trailer had been broken into at their hotel near International Drive (I-Drive). In an instant, dozens of the band’s instruments were gone, leaving nearly 30 students without the tools they needed for the performance of a lifetime.

The Discovery: A Silent Morning on I-Drive

The Ashland Arrows arrived in Orlando on Saturday, March 28, following an exhausting 22-hour bus ride from Ohio. The 160-member group, consisting of students, staff, and parent volunteers, was brimming with excitement as they checked into their hotel in the heart of Orlando’s tourist district.

The nightmare began early Sunday morning. The band’s truck driver, tasked with pulling the large equipment trailer, noticed that something looked “off” with the vehicle’s security. Upon closer inspection, he realized the heavy-duty padlocks were missing—locks that had been securely fastened just hours earlier.

The thieves had focused on smaller, high-value, and easily portable instruments. By the time the inventory was complete, the band realized they were missing thousands of dollars worth of:

  • Clarinets
  • Trumpets
  • Trombones
  • Saxophones

More Than Just Metal and Wood: The Sentimental Loss

While the financial toll was staggering, the emotional weight of the theft was far heavier. Unlike in some large school districts, where the school owns the fleet of instruments, nearly all the equipment in Orlando was stolen.

For these young musicians, an instrument is more than just a tool; it is a companion that holds years of memories. Speaking to local news, parents described the heartbreak of seeing their children lose irreplaceable items.

“They have a lot of memories with them,” band mom Brigitte Klotzek told FOX 35. “They are handed down from family members; they’re gifts. For a lot of the kids, it’s a little bit more than just an instrument.”

The most poignant loss involved a student whose stolen instrument was a gift from his father—a final memento given shortly before his father passed away. It is this “nasty” nature of the crime—stealing from children in the “Happiest Place on Earth”—that has sparked outrage across social media and the Central Florida community.

The Scramble: How the Music Stayed Alive

Facing a Monday morning performance deadline, Ashland High School’s staff refused to let the thieves win. While the students were sent to Disney Springs to boost their spirits, the staff spent Sunday scouring Orlando for replacements.

They visited two local music stores, spending hours coordinating individual, month-long rentals for each of the nearly 30 students affected. By Sunday evening, they had almost every student equipped with a “new-to-them” instrument. However, late Sunday night, they realized they were still short one crucial piece: a saxophone.

In a moment of “Disney Magic” meeting “Ohio Strong,” Kral reached out to other bands from Ohio who were also visiting the resort. A response came from the Anna High School Marching Band, a small school from Shelby County, Ohio. One of their members was extending her stay with her family. At midnight on Monday morning, Kral met the student’s mother in a hotel lobby to secure the final saxophone needed.

The Performance: Marching Down Main Street

On Monday, March 30, the Ashland High School Marching Band stepped onto the pavement of Magic Kingdom. Despite the “sorrow, anger, and disbelief” of the previous 24 hours, the band performed flawlessly.

A Recurring Nightmare: Orlando’s Pattern of Trailer Thefts

The theft targeting Ashland High School is not an isolated incident. Orlando’s I-Drive and Lake Buena Vista areas have unfortunately become a hotspot for “hitch-and-go” or “smash-and-grab” thefts targeting traveling youth groups.

A History of Heartbreak:

  • Volusia County Community Arts (2023): Thieves made off with a trailer filled with equipment used for local arts programs.
  • Port Orange High School (2018): In a similar overnight heist, this Florida-based band had their entire trailer stolen directly from their parking lot.
  • Jefferson High School (2021): A band trailer was stolen in the middle of the night, highlighting the vulnerability of high school equipment during away games and trips.

Security experts suggest that these thieves often scout hotel parking lots specifically for trailers with out-of-state plates, knowing they likely contain high-value equipment that is easy to move on the secondhand market.

How the Community is Fighting Back

The resilience of the Ashland band has been met with a wave of support. The Ashland High School Band Boosters launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the costs of the emergency rentals and the insurance deductibles for the stolen gear. Within days, the community raised thousands of dollars, ensuring that once the students return home, they will be equipped with quality replacements.

The Orlando Police Department investigation remains active. Officers are reviewing surveillance footage from the I-Drive corridor, looking for any sign of the suspects involved in the Sunday morning break-in.

Looking Forward: Protecting the Music

The Ashland incident serves as a stark warning for any organization traveling to high-traffic tourist destinations. Experts recommend:

  1. GPS Tracking: Using AirTags or GPS units in every high-value instrument case.
  2. Physical Barriers: Parking trailers in well-lit areas, backing them against walls to prevent the doors from being opened.
  3. Inventory: Maintaining a digital photo log of every instrument’s serial number.

While the Ashland Arrows will return to Ohio late this week with fewer instruments than they arrived with, they carry home something far more valuable: a story of resilience, a community that refused to let them fail, and the memory of a performance that no thief could ever take away.

If you have any information regarding the stolen Ashland High School instruments, please contact the Orlando Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-423-TIPS. Help these students recover their missing history.
