A frustrated family spoke out on social media after being targeted by Disneyland Resort security for carrying legal medication in their bag. Southern California Disney Park guests offered to throw out the medication to avoid further conflict, but security cast members called the police instead.

Disneyland Security Calls Police on Guests

Earlier this month, Reddit user u/wanderingraccoon85 shared their negative experience with Disneyland Resort security cast members. The social media user’s wife was carrying two sleeping pills in a small baggie to save space, rather than bringing the large bottle of medication. When security found the medicine, they asked what it was for.

“My wife explained to them what the pills were for and said that since it’s not clear, they can just throw them away,” the Disney Park guest wrote.

But security wouldn’t dispose of the pills. Instead, they did something the couple never expected.

“What they did was call the police,” the Redditor continued. “The police asked a few questions and just suggested throwing it away.”

The couple was eventually allowed into Disneyland Resort, but the experience with security soured their vacation.

“I understand the security concerns,” the guest wrote. “I understand that there are many people trying to bring drugs through, but, man, you’re an amusement park. If you can prevent a violation, do it, but what’s the point of escalating it? Where is the trust in your guests and common sense? I mean, even at the airport, where security is about people’s lives, it’s not like this. After that, all those ‘hello friend’ things were so fake.”

Bringing Medication to the Disney Parks

Disneyland Resort does not prohibit carrying prescription or over-the-counter medication into its theme parks, hotels, or the Downtown Disney District. Only illegal substances and cannabis (including for medical use) are banned from the Southern California Disney parks.

Interestingly, despite this couple’s experience, the official Disneyland Resort rules do not prohibit carrying loose medication into the theme parks. Although many articles on the official planDisney website recommend bringing the original container or prescription label, one advice post from March 14, 2026, notes that there are currently no rules requiring guests to label medication brought into Disneyland Park, Disney California Adventure Park, and Downtown Disney.

“We often travel with little ones, who require a lot of packed extras, including medicine,” Elizabeth, a planDisney panelist, wrote. “We typically keep their medications, including prescription medications, in a travel pill dispenser. It’s never been an issue for us going through security. There’s nothing currently in the park rules about bringing medication into the parks in its original container. However, park rules are subject to change, and it’s always up to the cast member working to decide at their discretion what can and cannot safely enter the parks.”

Other Guests Share Their Experiences

In the comments of the Reddit user’s post, other guests shared their experiences carrying medication into Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park.

“DL security is so inconsistent, I swear they just decide on things depending on their mood,” u/NoContribution9879 wrote. “I have had a little pill case in my purse every single time I have ever been to Disneyland, and have never once had anyone even ask about it. It’s literally a little plastic container in the shape of a pill, lol. I really hate that they can’t establish real guidelines for this stuff.”

“When I was pregnant and going to Disneyland I had my prenatal gummies in a plastic container,” said u/ Slaytert0t. “The security guy asked me about them, I said ‘prenatal gummies,’ and he put them back and let me through. They could have easily been cannabis gummies. I think it just depends on the security person.”

Others shared their own negative encounters with Disneyland Resort security.

“I’m still salty about how security handled our search on the day I got engaged,” u/Kindly_Conflict4659 commented. “We decided we both wanted to propose on the same day just how was gonna be a surprise. The guard found both ring boxes and like took them both out and made us very deliberately open both of them in full view of the other. Like went out of his way to do so. It wasn’t a secret for us but for most others that would have really soured the memory.”

“I feel violated by the security checkpoint every time I go through it,” u/Secret_Thought_8222 replied. “The people checking the bags are often rude, invasive and treat you like a suspect. I’ve had many encounters where a simple case for my glasses leads to 20 questions. It makes me not want to go to the park knowing my first engagement of the day is being searched like an incoming prisoner.”

As is often the case with social media posts, Disneyland Resort did not publicly respond to any of the accusations in the Reddit thread.
