A gastroenteritis outbreak has apparently hit one Disney Cruise Line ship.

Plenty of things can go wrong on vacation, but catching gastroenteritis is definitely up (or down) there with the worst of the worst.

Gastroenteritis spreads easily on cruise ships because thousands of passengers share dining areas, buffets, bathrooms, and railings in close quarters. Viruses such as norovirus can survive on surfaces for days, allowing outbreaks to move quickly through a ship despite sanitation efforts and isolation protocols.

Symptoms typically include sudden vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and fever. The illness can be extremely debilitating, leaving passengers confined to their cabins for days and severely dehydrated. Even mild cases can quickly drain energy, turning what should be a vacation into a miserable experience.

Outbreak Reported on Disney Cruise Ship

This month, gastroenteritis apparently hit the Disney Cruise Line.

As per The Straits Times, at least nine people – eight passengers and one crew member – reported symptoms after voyaging on the Disney Adventure from March 16 to 19.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) is now investigating the incident. While the guests in question received medical attention, they were not hospitalized, as can be the case in extreme cases.

This is far from the first time illness has hit a Disney Cruise.

In February, it was reported that a family aboard the Disney Wonder faced an extended quarantine after their daughter was diagnosed with a suspected viral illness. Doctors shared concerns that the daughter had mumps, a highly contagious viral disease that causes swelling of the salivary glands.

Meanwhile, back in 2023, dozens of guests reported “violent” sickness aboard the Disney Wish.

What is the Disney Adventure?

The Disney Adventure is Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship and the largest in the company’s fleet. The vessel entered service earlier this month, with its maiden voyage departing Singapore on March 10, 2026. At roughly 208,000 gross tons and more than 1,100 feet long, it can carry up to about 6,700 passengers.

Unlike most Disney cruises, the Disney Adventure operates short three- and four-night voyages that depart from and return to Singapore without visiting other ports. Instead, the ship itself acts as the main destination, offering themed entertainment areas, stage shows, character encounters, and attractions built around Disney, Pixar, and Marvel stories.

The ship represents Disney Cruise Line’s first permanent deployment in Asia and a major step in the company’s international expansion. It is the eighth vessel in the fleet and part of Disney’s broader push to grow its cruise business worldwide, bringing its theme park-style storytelling to new markets beyond North America and Europe.

However, the ship has received mixed reviews since its maiden voyage, with some guests criticizing everything from its thin mattresses to the chaos around character meet-and-greets.
