In the days and weeks that followed, information emerged slowly, and with each update came more uncertainty. What exactly happened on the ride has not been fully explained, leaving both the public and Zavala’s family searching for clarity.
A Headline Attraction Turned Somber
Stardust Racers was designed to be a defining attraction for Epic Universe. Built to deliver speed, intense motion, and visual spectacle, it was marketed as a next-level thrill ride—something that would instantly stand alongside Universal’s most iconic coasters. Guests flocked to experience it, eager to see what made Epic Universe different from anything that came before.
That excitement came to a sudden halt following Zavala’s death. Universal stated early on that the ride had operated as intended. Still, those words offered little comfort without an explanation of how a guest could suffer fatal injuries on an attraction built to meet rigorous safety standards.
The medical examiner later determined that Zavala died from multiple blunt impact injuries. The original report identified the incident as a fatality involving pre-existing conditions. However, that wording was later removed, and the final version simply categorized the incident as a fatality.
The change came after discussions with state officials, who questioned whether the reference to pre-existing conditions was appropriate. Universal submitted a revised report shortly afterward, without specifying such causes. Other unrelated incidents listed in the same report continued to reference pre-existing conditions, making the revision stand out.
The quiet nature of the update raised eyebrows. While officials stated that Universal followed proper procedures, the shift in description added to growing public concern—especially since investigators had not publicly connected Zavala’s medical history to his cause of death.
Disability at the Center of the Conversation
Zavala was born with spinal muscular atrophy and used a wheelchair. From early on, his legal representatives made it clear they would not allow his disability to be used as an explanation without evidence. According to attorneys for the family, suggesting that his lifelong condition caused his death ignores the facts as they are currently known.
They also criticized the attraction’s warning signage, saying it failed to clearly communicate who should and should not ride. In their view, the warnings were vague and did not specifically mention wheelchairs, mobility devices, or the ability to walk independently. Zavala, they say, did not experience daily pain or instability that would have signaled obvious danger.

Not long after Stardust Racers reopened, Universal updated its accessibility guidelines. The revised policy now states that guests using mobility devices must be able to walk independently to ride the attraction. The change applied not only to Stardust Racers but to select attractions across the park.
While companies routinely adjust safety policies, doing so after a fatal incident naturally invites scrutiny. Many observers questioned why the requirement was not explicitly stated before Zavala boarded the ride.

Meanwhile, both the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and the medical examiner’s office have declined to release detailed records related to the death, citing an active criminal investigation. Until that investigation concludes, many key details may remain withheld from the public.
