Last week, it was reported that Netflix, Inc. plans to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery after winning a bidding war. However, as the deal would include the Warner Bros. film, television, and video game studios, as well as DC Entertainment/DC Studios, audiences have been left wondering what will become of the newly established DC Universe following the acquisition.

The Fate of the DC Universe
For now, it seems the cinematic universe launched by DC Studios’ co-CEOs, James Gunn and Peter Safran, will remain intact. In an interview with Businessweek (via Bloomberg) following the news, WBD President and CEO David Zaslav assured fans that the DCU will continue across TV and theaters as originally intended, while praising Gunn and Safran:
“The work of James and Peter, their creative vision, it’s compelling and a great economic return. There’s no storytelling content that we have that provides a bigger palette than DC, and there’s nobody around right now who can tell these stories with the same imagination and excitement. The DC universe is big enough and strong enough that it should be available on all platforms. There are some stories that are important to be told in theaters around the world, and some stories that are important to be told as series.”
The DC Universe, which replaces the defunct DC Extended Universe, started in 2024 with the animated series Creature Commandos. Officially, it launched this year in theaters with Superman (directed and written by Gunn himself), which stars David Corenswet in the title role, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
The film grossed $616.7 million against its $225 million budget and received positive reviews from critics.

Upcoming DCU Films
Even before Superman landed in theaters, long-term plans for future DCU content spanning television and film had been outlined by Gunn and Safran, including Supergirl (2026), Superman: Man of Tomorrow (2027), and a Batman reboot titled The Brave and the Bold.
Now, fans who need more reassurance that the DCU is moving ahead despite Netflix’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery have it, as the first official teaser for the upcoming Supergirl movie (previously subtitled Woman of Tomorrow) has finally arrived online.
Supergirl
The film stars Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, cousin to Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman (Corenswet) who enjoyed a brief but hilarious cameo at the end of Gunn’s Man of Steel blockbuster. In the new teaser, Kara (Alcock) is seen seemingly waiting for a pickup from a spaceship in a desert location while sporting cool shades.
The teaser also sets the countdown for the trailer, which is expected to premiere this week.
Supergirl is only the first new entry since Superman on the silver screen — the DCU continued after Gunn’s film was released with Peacemaker Season 2, starring John Cena.
The upcoming film stars David Krumholtz (Supergirl’s father, Zor-El), Emily Beecham (Supergirl’s mother, Alura In-Ze), Jason Momoa (Lobo), and, more than likely, Krypto the Dog from Superman. Eve Ridley and Matthias Schoenaerts also star.
Directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Cruella) the upcoming film is an adaptation of the 2021–22 comic book miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely. It flies into theaters on June 26, 2026.
