Dolly Parton has shared an update after pulling out of an event honoring Dollywood.

Dolly Parton’s presence has long shaped the identity of Dollywood, the award-winning Tennessee theme park she co-owns. The property blends classic amusement attractions with deeply personal storytelling, including the immersive Dolly Parton Experience and seasonal festivals that highlight the singer’s Smoky Mountain roots.

Decades after opening in 1986, Dollywood still reflects Parton’s creative fingerprints. The park features major coasters, family shows, regional cuisine, and cultural exhibits that honor the area’s crafts and traditions. It remains a cornerstone of East Tennessee tourism and a physical extension of the star’s legacy.

Fans grew concerned earlier this year when Parton delayed shows and her sister, Freida Parton, asked for prayers amid “health challenges.” Parton had postponed upcoming Las Vegas performances in September, prompting widespread speculation about the singer’s well-being.

Freida later clarified that she “didn’t mean to scare anyone or make it sound so serious when asking for prayers for Dolly,” explaining that her sister was only “a little under the weather” and not facing a severe medical crisis.

Parton then reassured fans directly in a hopeful Instagram video. “I wanted you to know that I’m not dying. I’m not ready to die yet. I don’t think God is through with me and I ain’t done working. So I love you for caring and keep praying for me,” she said.

Dolly Parton Pulls Out of Another Dollywood Event

This week, the country icon pulled out of another major appearance — the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the annual IAAPA expo in Orlando.

The 79-year-old posted an optimistic message on Wednesday, explaining that “a few health challenges” ultimately kept her from attending.

“I sure wish I could be with you in person today, but you probably heard that I’ve been dealing with a few health challenges this fall and my doctors told me to take it easy for just a little while, and I’m truly sorry I can’t be there,” she said in a video.

Parton thanked Jack and Peter Herschend, founders of the Herschend group — Dollywood’s co-owners — crediting them for listening “when I come in with one of my big ideas and dreams, and somehow the amazing team at Dollywood finds a way to make those dreams come true” for her and the region.

She reflected on the park’s origins, recalling her early hopes for a Smoky Mountain destination where her family could perform and locals could find steady work. She described feeling “nervous” before opening day in 1986, when the former Silver Dollar City officially became Dollywood.

“So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for this honor, from me and from everyone who makes Dollywood what it is,” she concluded. “Remember that I will always love you.”

Growing Health Concerns For Dolly Parton

Parton’s IAAPA absence follows her earlier decision not to accept an honorary Oscar in person at last weekend’s Governors Awards. She accepted the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award remotely from Tennessee instead.

In that message, filmed beside her statue-like Oscar, Parton thanked 9 to 5 co-star Lily Tomlin and the Academy. “I’ve been blessed more than I ever dreamed possible… It makes me want to dream up new ways to help lift people up,” she said.

The singer lost her husband of more than 60 years, Carl Dean, in March. Parton also missed a Dollywood press conference in September due to a kidney stone that caused “a little problem,” she told attendees via video (via The Independent).

Dollywood turns 40 next year and continues expanding its offerings. At the press conference Parton missed, the park announced NightFlight Expedition — a $50 million hybrid coaster-water ride opening in 2026, marking the largest attraction investment in its history.

Even before this attraction opens, guests can explore soaring coasters like Wild Eagle and Lightning Rod, family classics such as Blazing Fury, seasonal events including the ongoing Smoky Mountain Christmas, artisan shops, musical performances, and, of course, endless delicious treats, such as the park’s iconic pull-apart cinnamon bread. The resort also operates hotels, a water park, and miles of mountain views that embody the spirit upon which Parton built the park.
