Disney going back to original creations is a welcome move. Focus on the story and storytelling, and avoid the Woke agenda. A compelling story sells. In other words, get back to family entertainment. I have been very critical of Disney and their recent past creative releases, with a few exceptions, but I haven’t given up hope that they can become a good studio once again.

Avoiding “woke” and making a movie that relates to everyone are not exclusive. The Only agenda a family movie should have is to tell a good story that is fun, exciting, and CONTROVERCY FREE.
Disney can’t go back to original movies, they don’t know how to. Even if they did create something original the animation would probably be AI and the story feature woke crap.
Wish and Strange World were good. But strange world was the better of the two. Hand drawn movies would be better. And no woke rubbish. Not wanting to offend someone. Are we all that pathetic? Nah! If Disney makes historical movies true or not. Hope they will be accurate with history. They should make movies that Walt Disney would approve off. He created Disney after all.
“DumpTrump” is just a whiney little leftist that gets upset when something doesn’t go their way. If it’s not part of the “woke agenda” or “liberal” or “leftist” thinking enough for them, they get upset and call it all racist or homophobic.
Anyone that leads off with that username tells you what they are all about without even having to write a single word.
Just because you don’t like Trump or his ideas doesn’t mean you need to make it your identity and entire mission to oppose him and those that do like him.
Ok so if Disney could actually pull off something good that would definitely be a shocker but I’m too mistrustful to. Just because it’s original doesn’t mean it’ll be good. It’ll be sloppily written like Toy Story 4 and Mufasa and yes be woke. You want good Disney stuff you watch stuff that’s twenty years old or more before Disney completely ditched hand drawn 2D cartoon animation and good, imaginative writers.
Disney can do what they did at the start: take an EXISTING story, contemporary rather than midieval fantasy perhaps (?), give the project to a good director along with a pile of money and then GO AWAY! Executive interference ruins more projects than anything else. Lots of good authors and stories out there.
I agree with everything except for contemporary. What is ruining Disney isn’t woke story telling its modern settings, modern dialogue that breaks the Emerson. Raya had me and then they started saying things like “bling is my thing.” It worked in Hercules because the tone was consistent for the entire movie. But the last thing we need is another modern story otherwise Pixar may as well take over everything. Maybe ancient stories from other cultures retold in animation like stories from indigenous communities.
Disney has many old fairytale stories they haven’t used yet that they can do a Disney version of like every movie they made before was based off of. If they want to be inclusive, there’s many mythology tales they can choose from. They just have to read, research, and do the work they used to like going to the place they’re making a movie for, and drawing the landscape of said places to help their creative ideas. They can’t be lazy like they have been anymore and I hope this ‘original movie’ they’re talking about for 2028 is actually going to be good. I hope they’re actually putting work and heart into it like they used to. If not, then Disney is gone until someone else takes it and brings it back from the ashes.
Not focusing on a woke agenda doesn’t mean not making it about white characters. In my opinion it means include minority groups but don’t make that the selling point. And please can we get songs that don’t devolve into awkward rap? We need the same art style used for princess and the frog, Lionking, and personally I would love less appreciated animals featured like bats and wolves. And memorable scores like the background music from the renneisance era of Disney.
I’m going to rephrase my comment above.
Disney can still make stories about minority groups. But the fact that the characters are part of minority groups should not be the selling point because that doesn’t help normalize anything. Gay pirates are completely fine, lots of pirates were gay etc…Now that being said Disney movies need to cut the modern crap, stop putting phones and gadgets in movies, stop using modern slang and please no more memes. Putting memes is movies grantees they will age like fresh vegetables. Meme humor is not sustainable. Just like the celebrity impressions Robin Williams did hold up other than the fact it’s Robin Williams. But ancient stories from other cultures like Mulan are perfect for using right now. Just. Stay. Away. From. Modernization. That’s what takes away the magic. Trust me.
White Guy here. I believe that anything being called “Woke” in a Disney movie by critics and watchers are practically flaming racists. Any step taken to bring narratives forward to reality of today’s world and social changes happening is usually unwelcoming and aggressively opposed by majority White families and the good ole boy ideals. I hope Disney doesn’t backfoot on this because it will only prove that once you make strides for those whose voices are usually silenced or drowned out, the trolls and bigots alike are gonna trash the position as non friendly and against the American Way. Shit, no wonder the world and other countries see Americans as ugly and obnoxious.
I thought Encanto was an excellent movie. After Lin-Manuel Miranda’s track record of having to be “woke” and controversial in everything he touched, I put off watching it. I watched it with someone else that wanted to see it, and was extremely surprised.
Everything about it was well done. This is what Disney can, and should be doing in their studios.
Here’s the thing. If they wanna go back to doing originals, I’m okay with that. But I’m absolutely not interested in anything they do unless it’s handdrawn animated. I can only hope the rumors of 2D animation supposedly returning are true, because I find these sequels and CG fests tiresome. They’re getting sterile.
It’s about time. New instead of remakes. New princesses with their own stories not rehashed with the wrong person. Like Moana you wouldn’t use a white girl with blonde hair for her.
Remember this quote from the article and stick to it. Families.
“Original animated hits are crucial for Disney because they keep the company relevant with families”
While I do hope something good does come of this, but even then I’m a bit iffy on this revelation because of how cynical I’m getting towards this medium. I feel like this is just more “Alright we’ll do more original things, can you shut up already?” Since it doesn’t help how some fans come off as entitled and spoiled. And with how politically divided things are now, some of those negative criticisms become confirmation bias fuel for terrible right wing nut jobs or elitists to harass and bully the cast and crew members. I.E what happened with Genndy Tartakovsky’s Fixed. When even if you give them what they think they wanted it’s still not good enough for their egos. Are they really wanting original ideas for the right reasons? Are they wanting to push the medium and creativity forward, or it just to push their self-indulgent agenda that gives artists and fans a bad name?

If Disney actually creates a handrawn, original and woke free film I will eat my hat. But I do not trust Disney to do anything good.

Don’t cry. You can always watch Birth of a Nation or read Mein Kampf, wallflower.
