Disney’s Animal Kingdom is in the middle of a pretty exciting makeover, and today we’re talking about one of the most noticeable changes already taking shape on Discovery Island.
Fans who remember meeting Dug and Russell from Up (2009) in their adorable little wilderness-explorer-approved corner of the park are going to notice something new the next time they walk by. That space has officially turned the page and reopened with a fresh pair of furry faces from Zootopia (2016).

Yes, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde have arrived at Disney’s Animal Kingdom with a brand-new meet-and-greet location, bringing even more energy to the area right in time for the opening of the park’s new Zootopia experience.
A familiar spot with a brand-new vibe
If you’ve spent time wandering Discovery Island, you’ve passed the former meet-and-greet space used for the Upcharacters. That spot has now been transformed into the Zoogether Day Gathering Spot, where guests can hang out with Judy and Nick. It sits near the Tree of Life theater, the same area where the new Zootopia show is taking over the former It’s Tough to Be a Bug theater.

For longtime fans, seeing that space repurposed brings on some mixed emotions. Dug and Russell charmed guests for years, and families made so many memories meeting the Wilderness Explorers duo. While it’s exciting to welcome Judy and Nick, there’s still a lingering question floating around: will the Up characters return somewhere else in the park?
Right now, Disney hasn’t announced a new home for Dug and Russell. That doesn’t mean they’re gone forever, but for the time being, Zootopia is getting the spotlight and the Up crew is without a confirmed meet-and-greet location. For many fans, that’s the biggest loose end in this transition.
A new era arrives at Animal Kingdom
The new Zootopia show, Zootopia: Better Zoogether, officially opens on November 7. This has been one of the most anticipated updates for Animal Kingdom, especially because it marks a major shift away from the park’s Bug-themed theater experience and into something more aligned with modern Disney storytelling.

If you’ve followed the park’s development over the last year, you know this show has been teased for a while. It’s part of a larger plan to bring more animated storytelling and character energy to the park as it evolves beyond some of its earlier themes. Judy and Nick greeting guests just outside the new show space feels like the perfect combo move: watch the show, then meet the stars. Disney knows what it’s doing here.
Previews are already underway
Even though the big debut is November 7, previews for Zootopia: Better Zoogether are already happening. Annual Passholders, Disney Vacation Club Members, and Cast Members have been among the first to get a peek inside. That early-access period is usually a good indicator of how popular something might be once it officially launches, and so far, curiosity is definitely driving attendance.

And now, adding a meet-and-greet into the mix gives Passholders even more of a reason to swing by during previews. New entertainment plus characters equals a guaranteed crowd magnet, especially in a park that has been searching for its next big guest-draw while closures and transformations happen elsewhere, like the upcoming Encanto and Indiana Jones additions replacing the old Dinoland area.
What this means for fans
Character meet-and-greets remain one of Disney’s most powerful tools for pulling guests deeper into new stories. So even though this is technically a replacement experience rather than a totally new corner of the park, it feels like the start of a larger chapter for Animal Kingdom. This park is stepping away from some of the older entertainment, refreshing experiences, and making room for a new generation of characters.

Disney has been testing different strategies lately when it comes to building hype for new offerings, and this preview period proves it. Fans get to pop in early, vloggers get a look to share online, and the momentum builds right up until opening day.
Still, the nostalgia factor is real. Guests loved the Up meet-and-greet because the characters had heart and fit the park’s theme beautifully. So does Zootopia, in its own way. Judy’s energy, Nick’s charisma, and the city-meets-nature vibe of their story blend nicely with the world of Animal Kingdom. But until we hear about Russel and Dug’s next home, fans will keep asking.
Looking ahead
Once November 7 arrives, we’re officially in Zootopia season at Animal Kingdom. You’ll be able to step inside the world of Zootopia with the new show, then meet the stars right outside. And with more changes coming to the park over the next few years, it feels like this is just the start of Disney rolling out more character-driven experiences across the area.

If you’re planning a trip soon, definitely swing by Discovery Island to meet the ZPD’s most determined bunny officer and her fox-turned-ally partner. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of the film or just curious what all the buzz is about, it’s a fun chance to see the park grow in a new direction.
And if you still miss the Wilderness Explorers crew, you aren’t alone. Fans are hopeful we’ll see Russell and Dug pop up again once Disney finalizes their next home. Until then, the spotlight belongs to Judy and Nick, and Zootopia has officially begun its takeover of Animal Kingdom.
