Next year, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will begin again with the return of the Avengers in the fifth installment of the team-up franchise.

Kevin Feige’s MCU has been in a state of flux for a while now, with no movie guaranteed a successful run at the box office. From the heights of Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) to the lows of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) and Captain America: Brave New World (2025), Disney’s superhero franchise has endured a rocky time over the last four years.

That said, the return of the Russo Brothers to the helm of the forthcoming Avengers two-parter, Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027), is set to reignite the spark and launch the MCU into a new era–one that both the Russos and Feige have deemed a new beginning, or reset of sorts.

With a massive cast including the likes of MCU mainstays such as Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Captain America) to familiar faces from the 20th Century Studios universe like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan–who played Professor X and Magneto, respectively, in the X-Men film franchise–Doomsday is shaping up to be a significant Multiversal event.

And that is not to mention the return of tenured Tony Stark/Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr., who enters Phase Six as the notorious comic book villain, Victor Von Doom, AKA Doctor Doom. First teased in the post-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025), Doctor Doom is rumored to be an anti-hero in this next chapter, who challenges the Avengers’ ideals on the Multiverse.

Once set for a May 2026 release, with Secret Wars to follow in May 2027, the pair of movies was significantly pushed back to December of their respective years. This firmly places the Avengers movies in the holiday corridor, a lucrative time for The Walt Disney Company. Following this year’s Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025) December release, the House of Mouse is set up for three consecutive years of Christmas box office success.

We now have information on the filming process for both movies, per a new report from The Hollywood Reporter.

“AGBO and the Russos are in post-production on Avengers: Doomsday, with additional photography expected to take place in the spring before cameras roll on Avengers: Secret Wars in the summer,” the outlet wrote.

This coincides with reports that Doomsday‘s ending remains fluid, and that reshoots taking place close to the beginning of Secret Wars filming will likely inform how the Russo brothers wrap up the fifth Avengers movie.

It is likely that several fan-favorite MCU heroes will not make it out of Doomsday alive, with concerns mounting for the likes of Thor (Hemsworth) and Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) — and even Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier.
