Gina Carano’s time with Star Wars seemed long over. Fired from The Mandalorian in 2021 after a series of social media controversies, she spent the past few years locked in a legal battle with Disney and Lucasfilm.
Now, that fight has ended in a settlement — and with it comes some renewed speculation that her character, Cara Dune, could find her way back into the faraway galaxy.

Carano’s lawsuit claimed she was wrongfully terminated after Disney called her posts “abhorrent and unacceptable.” While neither side has revealed details of the settlement, it’s possible the former MMA fighter could return in Lucasfilm’s next Star Wars feature: The Mandalorian & Grogu.
The upcoming movie, which continues the story of Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his tiny companion, has already finished filming — but its first trailer failed to stir much excitement. Once, a Star Wars preview could absolutely dominate the internet. But this one landed quietly, with many fans noting its small-screen look and lack of spectacle. Watch the trailer below:

That lukewarm response reflects a larger issue for the franchise. After years of divisive projects — The Rise of Skywalker, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and The Acolyte — enthusiasm is running low. Even The Mandalorian lost some of its magic during Season 3, which drew mixed reviews.
Carano’s Cara Dune was written out before that season aired. Greef Karga (the late Carl Weathers) briefly mentioned her being “recruited by special forces,” and her planned spinoff, Rangers of the New Republic, was quietly canceled. The character hasn’t been seen since, not even in animation or tie-in novels.

Still, the studio could be tempted to make a bold move. With The Mandalorian & Grogu facing waning buzz, a surprise cameo might offer a marketing jolt. Carano’s return would undoubtedly be controversial, but controversy draws attention — something Disney could use right now.
No other supporting characters from the series, including Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff), Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson), or Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison), have been confirmed for the film. For now, the focus remains on Din Djarin (Pascal) and Grogu — and whether that’s enough to recapture the galaxy’s attention when the movie arrives in May 2026, remains to be seen.
