Reaching speeds of up to 65 mph, Test Track is one of the fastest rides in all of Walt Disney World, but this thrilling attraction came to a sudden halt over the weekend. On Sunday, September 21, Test Track faced a technical issue, forcing all ride vehicles to stop.

A video of the incident was shared online, showing one of the ride vehicles hitting the brakes hard right as it came around the iconic outdoor inward turn. Tire smoke filled the air, and a cast member could be heard instructing riders as to what was going on.

Emergency stop on Test Track. Wow, that stopped fast!

It’s unclear what actually caused the ride to stop or how long riders were stuck, but it certainly put a damper on what is often considered one of the most fun and thrilling attractions at Disney World. However, it’s pretty impressive how fast the vehicles can stop, especially considering this one was traveling at least 60 mph.

Usually, when guests are stuck for extended periods of time on a ride, they are given a Lightning Lane Single Pass to use for select attractions once they exit.

Test Track opened in 1998, though the thrill ride looked quite different from what it does now. It was initially meant to represent the vehicle testing process before they hit the market. As a result, riders underwent all kinds of on and off-road tests as if they were actual test dummies.

The original version of Test Track was much more rugged and gritty than what would come later. In 2012, Test Track 2.0 officially opened, marking a turning point for the thrill ride.

Gone was the warehouse aesthetic and in its place came a shiny new “futuristic” look, one evocative of Disney’s recently released Tron Legacy film. Bright neon colors and projected effects filled the warehouse, turning the ride into a more serious, less whimsical experience.

Fans weren’t too thrilled by this redesign, and neither was Disney, with the company overhauling Test Track once again.

The most recent iteration of the attraction opened in 2025, now featuring a totally new look and design philosophy. Disney made sure to look back into EPCOT’s history for this redesign, pulling inspiration from some of the park’s most legendary attractions, such as Horizons and World of Motion.
