It’s time for Disney to do something with this classic attraction.

Over the years, fans have watched numerous classic Disney theme park rides and attractions either close forever or undergo major remodels. A great example of this is Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. The log flume ride replaced Disney’s iconic Splash Mountain in 2024, sending the parks on a whole new path.

Other significant changes are still on the horizon, such as the transformation of DINOSAUR into a new Indiana Jones-themed attraction.

However, there’s one ride that needs a lot of work but has received little attention from Disney: Journey Into Imagination With Figment.

This dark ride is a classic piece of EPCOT history, but it remains a shadow of its former self, with most guests disappointed by its current state. Disney is aware of how fans feel, making several teases about the fate of the attraction over the years.

However, nothing has materialized for Figment or his attraction. We truly hope the attraction gets the love and care it deserves. But if Disney isn’t willing to do something soon, maybe it’s time to pull the plug on Figment completely.

A banner reading "Journey Into Imagination" is displayed near the entrance of the building in the foreground. Trees and greenery surround the base of the pyramids, leading to a Disney Vacation Club Member Lounge.

Journey Into Imagination opened in 1983, offering guests the chance to explore a new world with Dreamfinder, an original character created specifically for EPCOT. Dreamfinder was the star of the show, though his little purple dragon (dinosaur?) friend named Figment would grow to become one of Disney’s most iconic and popular creations of all time.

The ride quickly became a staple of EPCOT and Walt Disney World as a whole, but things would eventually change.

In 1999, a new version of the ride opened called Journey Into YOUR Imagination. The scenes and locations of the original ride were nowhere to be seen, with riders instead exploring a new place called the Imagination Institute.

Figment’s presence in the ride was significantly cut back.

Journey Into YOUR Imagination was poorly received and only lasted until 2001, when the attraction was again redesigned and retooled.

Journey Into Imagination with Figment, the current iteration of the ride, opened in 2002 and has been the bane of many Disney fans’ existence. While the ride is certainly a step up compared to the previous version of the ride, nothing Disney has done has come close to matching the charm of the original Journey Into Imagination.

Figment is much less interesting than before, with the purple critter pulling childish gags on his captive audience. The ride isn’t clever or imaginative; it’s annoying and kind of awkward.

We will be watching whatever happens with Figment, but it seems like the current version of the ride has run its course, leaving the ball in Disney’s court.

Are you hoping for a Figment refresh in Walt Disney World?
