For thirty years, Pixar Animation Studios has been creating memorable films that audiences fall in love with. Movies like Toy Story (1995), Monsters, Inc. (2001), Finding Nemo (2003), Up (2009), Inside Out (2015), Coco (2017), and Elemental (2023) create lasting impressions and stories that will be passed on from parents who grew up watching them to their children.
Of course, not every Pixar film is a blockbuster hit, and it’s not a secret that the studio has been struggling in recent years, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. Onward (2020) was only in theaters for a couple of weeks before it had to be pulled because movie theaters shut down. The next three movies — Soul (2020), Luca (2021), and Turning Red (2022) — did not even make it into theaters.

However, one of Pixar’s most controversial moments came in June 2022, with the release of Lightyear. The film told the story of Buzz Lightyear, the famous Space Ranger, who was the inspiration for the toy featured in Toy Story. Buzz and his crew find themselves marooned on a hostile planet, millions of miles from Earth. Buzz and his crew work tirelessly to find a way home, but things take a dangerous turn when Emperor Zurg arrives with his army of ruthless robots.
From the jump, Lightyear was incredibly controversial among Pixar’s dedicated fanbase. A lot of people were angry that Disney and Pixar were making a Buzz Lightyear movie without Tim Allen, the original voice actor. And it didn’t matter to them that the movie was not about the toy Buzz Lightyear, but the Space Ranger the toy was based on.

Another big issue some people had was that the movie showed a lesbian couple. Alisha Hawthorne is Buzz Lightyear’s best friend, as well as his crew’s commanding officer. During the movie, Alisha gets married to a wonderful woman, starts a family, and lives a happy life.
Unfortunately, instead of focusing on the fact that Alisha is in a healthy, loving relationship, critics focused on the fact that the movie showed the two women sharing a kiss. The kiss was originally removed from the movie, but after a wave of backlash, it was put back into the final cut, leading to several countries banning the film.
And now, famous rapper Snoop Dogg has revealed that seeing a lesbian couple in the movie was so disturbing that he is “scared” to take his grandchildren to the movies.

In an interview with the It’s Giving podcast, the “Gin and Juice” singer says that he does not want to take his grandchildren to the movies because of the uptick in LGBTQIA representation. And he was especially bothered when he saw it in Lightyear.
“What you see is what you see, and they’re putting it everywhere.”
He said that during the film, his grandson asked about how two mothers could have a baby.
“They’re like, ‘She had a baby — with another woman.’ Well, my grandson, in the middle of the movie is like, ‘Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman!’”
“Oh s**t, I didn’t come in for this s**t. I just came to watch the go***mn movie.’ ‘They just said, she and she had a baby — they’re both women. How does she have a baby?’”
“It f***ed me up. I’m like, scared to go to the movies. Y’all throwing me in the middle of s**t that I don’t have an answer for… It threw me for a loop. I’m like, ‘What part of the movie was this?’ These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”

Even though Lightyear did not perform well at the box office, it still marked a huge moment for Disney and Pixar, as it featured Disney’s first prominent LGBTQIA couple, as well as the first same-sex kiss.
This is not the first time that Snoop has spoken against the LGBTQIA community. In the past, he has used anti-gay slurs, made homophobic and transphobic statements, and called Caitlyn Jenner — who is transgender — a “science experiment.”
Snoop Dogg is set to headline the Australian Football League’s Grand Final, which is scheduled for September 27. However, there have been many calls for him to be replaced, especially after a player in the AFL was recently banned for using a homophobic slur. Australia is largely considered a very gay-friendly country, with strong anti-discrimination laws.
What do you think of Snoop Dogg’s comments about being “scared” to go to the movies with his grandkids? Do you think it’s a good thing that more children’s movies are showcasing more representation?
