For nearly twenty years, Marvel Studios has been releasing incredible superhero movies, starting with Iron Man in 2008. Marvel films have let fans fall in love with some classic superheroes in a whole new way. Over the years, 37 films have been released in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and eight more are in active development.

Some of the franchise’s most popular films have featured superheroes like Captain America, Thor, Black Panther, and Doctor Strange. And fans have even loved Marvel villains like Loki, who had his own series on Disney+.

On May 2, Marvel switched things up and released a film not about superheroes, but antiheroes. Marvel’s Thunderbolts* starred Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent, and David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian.

After nearly dying in a trap set by Valentina (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss), the group must band together and go on a mission that will make them confront the dark pasts they would rather forget.

While fans seemed excited to see this group of rag-tag antiheroes band together, that did not translate to box office success. As of today, Thunderbolts* has grossed under $400 million at the global box office. It is one of the lowest-grossing Marvel films, and according to a report from Varietyit needs to earn at least $425 million to break-even.

However, just because a film is not successful in theaters does not mean that it won’t be successful elsewhere. Unfortunately, for studios like Disney, Marvel, and Pixar, some of their more recent films have seen more success on Disney+ than they ever saw in theaters. And that might just be the case for Thunderbolts*.

It’s been just over 100 days since Thunderbolts* was released in theaters, and many have been wondering when exactly the movie will become available to stream on Disney+. And now, it looks like we might have an answer.

According to a photo from a Reddit post, a Greek Disney+ ad revealed that the movie will begin streaming on Disney+ on August 27

While Thunderbolts* might not have been a financial success, it was a success among fans. When it comes to audience ratings, Captain America: Brave New World (2025) received an audience score of 76%. The Marvels (2023) scored only slightly higher at 79%

Thunderbolts*, however, scored an impressive 93% rating, coming in just behind Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), which had a 94% audience score.

Disney has not confirmed when Thunderbolts* will premiere on Disney+, but hopefully, the Greek television spot has given us a good idea of a release date.

Did you see Thunderbolts* in theaters? How do you think it ranks in terms of Marvel movies? Do you prefer to see Marvel movies in theaters, or do you wait for them to stream on Disney+? Share your thoughts in the comments!
