Disney Cruise Guests Advised To Change Vacation Plans as Hurricane Erin Approaches

It was supposed to be a sun-soaked Caribbean escape. Families packed their Disney gear, counting down the days until they could board the newest ship in the fleet. Then, with one email, the dream vacation shifted course—literally. In the unpredictable world of summer cruising, nothing can alter a voyage faster than a hurricane spinning across warm Atlantic waters.

This is the reality guests on the Disney Treasure are waking up to right now. With Hurricane Erin now the first major storm of the season, the carefully planned route from Port Canaveral to the British Virgin Islands has been reimagined on the fly. And while Florida itself is unlikely to see a direct hit, the ripple effects are reaching deep into Disney Cruise Line operations.

In this article, we’ll break down exactly what’s happening, which destinations are now on the schedule, how to navigate last-minute cruise changes, and what it all means for travelers booking during hurricane season.

What’s Happening With Hurricane Erin

Hurricane Erin, officially upgraded from a tropical storm, is the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season. As of Friday morning, it’s spinning about 460 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands with sustained winds of 75 mph. Forecasters predict it will strengthen into a major hurricane this weekend, taking a curved path northward between Bermuda and the U.S. East Coast.

Erin has now become a hurricane, the first of the Atlantic season. NHC still expects Erin to become a major hurricane this weekend, perhaps making a run at Category 5 status. While Florida isn’t expected to take a direct hit, dangerous surf and rip currents are likely along the state’s Atlantic beaches Monday through Wednesday. More critically for Disney Cruise Line guests, Erin’s projected track is forcing significant route adjustments for ships departing from Port Canaveral.

Disney Treasure’s New Itinerary

Guests boarding the Disney Treasure on Saturday, August 16, were originally headed for Tortola and St. Thomas. Instead, the ship will now visit:

  • Cozumel, Mexico

  • George Town, Grand Cayman

  • Falmouth, Jamaica

A stop at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, is still on the schedule for Friday. Port Adventures booked in Tortola and St. Thomas have been automatically canceled, with new excursions available for the replacement destinations.

Disney Cruise Line is communicating changes directly to guests via email and travel agents. Onboard, updates are made through the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app and crew announcements. It’s worth noting that more adjustments could still happen once the sailing begins, depending on Erin’s development.

How to Handle Cruise Changes During Hurricane Season

Veteran cruisers know the golden rule of sailing during storm season: flexibility is key. Here’s how to make the best of unexpected shifts:

  • Rebook excursions early – Popular Port Adventures at alternate stops can sell out quickly.

  • Use the Navigator app daily – It’s the fastest way to stay updated on onboard activities and port changes.

  • Pack for varied climates – Alternate ports may have different weather and activities than originally planned.

  • Embrace the detour – Cozumel’s reefs, Grand Cayman’s Stingray City, and Jamaica’s waterfalls offer experiences just as memorable as the original itinerary.

Why This Matters to Disney Fans

For many, a Disney Cruise is a once-in-a-lifetime splurge. Changes like these can feel disappointing, especially for guests who’ve been dreaming of specific ports for months. But Disney’s reputation for guest service often turns potential setbacks into unique adventures.

Social media reactions to Erin’s disruption show a mix of concern and excitement—some fans lament losing the Virgin Islands, while others are thrilled to explore new destinations. Historically, Disney’s handling of storm reroutes has kept guest satisfaction high, and the addition of Castaway Cay still ensures that signature Disney magic.
