Filming for HBO’s reboot of Harry Potter is now officially underway – but don’t expect to hear news about Voldemort 2.0 anytime soon.

Two years after it was initially announced, production for the Harry Potter TV series began on Monday. With rumors suggesting that filming for both Season 1 and Season 2 will occur back-to-back, we’ve received a flurry of casting announcements in the past few days, such as the stars portraying Neville Longbottom (Rory Wilmot) and Dudley Dursley (Amos Kitson).

This joins an already lengthy list of actors confirmed for other key roles. That includes, of course, Harry Potter (Dominic McLaughlin), Ron Weasley (Alastair Stout), and Hermione Granger (Arabella Stanton), as well as the likes of Albus Dumbledore (John Lithgow), Severus Snape (Paapa Essiedu), and Rubeus Hagrid (Nick Frost).

One major role remains under wraps: Lord Voldemort, the franchise’s central villain and Harry Potter’s ultimate foe. Ralph Fiennes famously portrayed him in the films, but it’s still unknown who will take on the role in the reboot – and we shouldn’t expect to find out any time soon.

A source has told Rednian Intelligence that an actor has already been cast as He Who Must Not Be Named. However, the plan is reportedly not to publicly cast the actor, and instead save the reveal for when the show airs. That means fans probably won’t be able to put a face to the iconic villain – who will apparently feature in multiple episodes – until 2027.

Whether that strategy pays off is still uncertain. Speculation over who might succeed Fiennes as Voldemort has been swirling for some time, with names like Cillian Murphy and James McAvoy (who previously came close to playing young Tom Riddle in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets) frequently mentioned.

The same source also doubled down on the report that the first two seasons are filming back-to-back. Well, kind of. The idea is to apparently film Season 1 from now until May 2026, then film Season 2 after a short two-month break from July 2026 to May 2027. Presumably, the following seasons will follow a similar pattern.

Each season will apparently consist of six episodes, requiring a lengthy production process to account for the U.K.’s child labor laws (which were already adjusted decades ago for the production of the Harry Potter films). By filming consecutive seasons, the show will avoid any issues with the young cast significantly aging between each installment, as has been the case for the likes of Stranger Things.

Every season will adapt a different Harry Potter book, with the first following the storyline of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” in which Harry and his friends uncover a plot to steal the stone and restore Lord Voldemort a decade after his downfall and the death of Harry’s parents. Rednian Intelligence reports that the first episode will end with Harry and his fellow students crossing the lake to Hogwarts.
