A week out from Father’s Day, there are some simple things that every dad knows. It’s the simple rules that every dad receives when his first child is born, like a lawn mower and cargo shorts.

Every dad knows that WD-40 can fix nearly every problem, and when something is broken, throw a screw in it. So, perhaps it was Disney’s resident dad, Goofy, who made the trek from CommuniCore Hall to the Plaza to fix one of EPCOT’s biggest problems, because if this fix came from Disney Imagineering, there are some larger issues there.

Disney has decided that the newest fix for the lightning issues in CommuniCore Plaza was to sink blue decking screws into the plastic LED lightning trips to prevent them from being a tripping hazard. Last week, Disney blocked off part of the area to keep guests from tripping over the lights after they started to pop up.

This is Disney’s latest attempt to fix the lighting in the new Plaza, which has rarely worked properly since it opened.

Lighting Issues

It’s been over a year since EPCOT opened CommuniCore Plaza to guests. The crowning achievement is the lighting on the sidewalk, which syncs with Spaceship Earth to create a stunning illusion for guests.

Ever since they opened, the sidewalk lighting has caused problems. Two weeks after opening, the lights were broken. Shortly after that, Disney fixed them, but they were broken again.

Now, a year later, the lights appear to be permanently broken. It is unclear why Disney can’t get the lighting right. At first, it seemed that the plastic placed over the lights was destroyed by the hot Florida sun.

Disney has tried everything to fix this, but none of the fixes seem to work. Fans wonder if Disney has just given up on the EPCOT lighting.

Now, this latest fix has Disney fans scratching their heads that the company would use the same fix that your father would use to fix your back deck. One fan wrote on X:

Wow, this is terrible. Just when you think Epcot lights can’t get any worse. Pretty sure sinking a screw in it like that is going to let moisture in. Perhaps they don’t care since they pose a tripping hazard and don’t work right anyway. At this point, remove them.

So, it appears that Disney’s latest attempt to fix the lighting with deck screws has just made things that much worse. Dads around the world are shaking their heads.
