“The Lone Ranger (2013) was considered one of Disney’s most expensive failures? It reportedly cost $250 million and only earned $260 million globally—barely breaking even when marketing and distribution costs are factored in.”
That’s not breaking even. That’s a catastrophic loss. Disney doesn’t get 1:1 dollars back from tickets sold. Cinemas don’t run films for free.
Disney needed to make about $600 million on Lone Ranger just to break even when you factor in marketing.
Snow White needs a jaw dropping $740 mil to get out of the red. And that is a conservative estimate.
Lone Ranger still made more than Snow White, with DVD sales exceeding $50 million. While a big loss, Disney was at its peak, so the impact wasn’t as severe. POTC 4, often seen as the worst of the franchise, still grossed nearly $800M despite Depp’s controversy. Even Dune, a masterpiece, didn’t reach that. One thing is certain: without Depp, POTC is doomed to fail.
Zegler’s hiding in England right now doing a stage production there.
I’m sure she’s hoping that this will all blow over before she comes back. I’m hopeful she learns some humility in that time.
she does have a great singing voice, so I’m hopeful she can learn, and maybe even become a good actress on top of it, but some people shoot too high too fast and don’t learn what they need to along the way, she might be a casualty of that.
Great article! Thank you.
The remaking of Snow White, with this modified story line, no real little people actors and Zegler in the title role shows that Bob Iger no longer (did he ever?) possesses the judgement and artistic and creative skills to be running an entertainment corporation. This project never should have been allowed to move forward. Iger said in an interview as he was retiring the first time, that he just wasn’t listening to critical feedback and opinions of others before making decisions and he then realized it was time for him to retire. Guess what? Iger’s inability to listen to others has only gotten worse. Retire now Iger. Disney, let’s go already with Bob’s replacement. Iger and his team are full fledged disasters!
Disney is a business and doesn’t really care about much except their bottom line. Until they suffer hugely they will keep making flops, bad decisions and raising prices. My opinion.
“Remember when The Lone Ranger (2013) was considered one of Disney’s most expensive failures? It reportedly cost $250 million and only earned $260 million globally—barely breaking even when marketing and distribution costs are factored in. At the time, critics and shareholders alike were tearing the studio apart for betting too big.”
That is NOT an example of barely breaking even. For people who are supposed to be a part of this business you don’t seem to know much about the basic economics of movie making. EVERY single movie released at the box office that sells tickets equal to the production cost of the film are guaranteed losers. They can even make %25 – %50 more that the production cost and its still a fail. Why? B/C the studios don’t get to keep all of the box office ticket sales; they split those with theatre chains domestically. Over seas it varies with China sharing a mere %25 of the ticket sales with the studio.
This is also without taking into account this thing called MARKETING which is NOT free and on major releases is often close to the production cost meaning SNOW WHITE likely costs around $500-$600 million.
To “Break even” a theatrical releases typically has to do at least 2.5x the production cost and even then it’s not a guarantee. YES I know there are all kinds of tax credits and the like that reduces costs but those pale in comparison. No amount of tax credits and grants will make a movie break even that sells the same in box office tickets that it’s production cost was set equal to.
“For people who are supposed to be a part of this business”
If you’re talking about aye tea em, they’re NOT. They are no more than an on-line a tab Lloyd. If they thought they could get away with it, they would post about ghost aliens getting a Disney cast member pregnant.
I agree no Johnny Depp, no pirates. And if they do make one without him I’m not even going to acknowledge it’s existence. It will not be PotC to make at all. You better see this comment Disney!
When I first started reading itm, most comments were left leaning. Fast forward to today and it’s the exact opposite. Wake up Disney and stop being woke!!
What if Disney apologized and gave Depp everything he wanted and he still said no! Is it still on Disney or is it on Depp that the next movie doesn’t have him in it?
I’m a liberal, sorry this crazy woke narrative is pushing too far. No POTC without Johnny Depp. He’s irreplaceable as Jack Sparrow. Time for Disney to give views what/who they want!
Three simple words to Disney about making a pirates of the Caribbean movie without johnny Depp.
DON’T DO IT!
it won’t bode well for the franchise or the pocket book
I agree with most of this, but, I’ll give you a great example? How many actors played Batman? How many more did voice over animation work? None of that really affected the franchise?
It’s Mr. Depp’s eccentric nature that makes him almost indispensable but also why Disney can’t afford to move on with him. You have a lot of movie patrons like myself who has a problem with his private life and wouldn’t go see a new pirates movie with him in it.
Going back to D.C. again how did the flash’s they-them child abduction work out for that movie.
All things said I won’t go see the sleeping beauty movie and I’m glad it’s failing. Because of Disney’s woke attitude I haven’t been back to Disney world and I proposed to my wife there in Cinderella’s castle with Cinderella as our witness. We’re planning Universal this year. I hope another failure for Disney will “unwoke” them up and we will be comfortable again at Disney.
One thing is for sure? We do together determine if any Disney endeavor be it movies or parks or even streaming are successfully.

Bring back Johnny Depp to Pirates and you’ll see just how powerful Disney can be. Woke = Broke!!!

The next company to hire Zegler and her woke ideals is bound to fail just as bad as Disney has. Learn from your mistakes everyone.

Disney needs to find that $300 million and a million alpacas or another PotC will be a flop like Snow White. Nobody can replace Johnny Depp.

Zegler wants to free Palestine, why doesn’t she go over there?
……and stay there?
Chris
Disney is not listening they’re still going to do what they want and ignore the fans

The Lone Ranger was Ok, It was alot closer to the orginal storyline than snow white flop. Simple, No Capt. Jack [Depp], No POTC.

No one is going to see the Sleeping Beauty movie, because there isn’t one…except for the 1959 version on Disney+ and people’s DVD/Blu-ray shelves.
David
I vote Disney takes time off from making big budget movies and instead invest in a new WDW park. It’s been 27 years from the last new park in WDW.
