One of the most unique things about Jim Carrey is that he has become synonymous with several iconic characters in film.

Now, his return as the evil, mustache-twirling scientist Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which has grossed $422.4 million worldwide, has sparked conversations about the star potentially reprising other roles, like the Grinch from the beloved 2000 movie.

In an interview with ComicBook.com in December, Carrey, 63, was asked about whether he’d ever slip back into the green skinsuit and prosthetics.

Feeling particularly honest, Carrey admitted that while he has little interest in returning to play the character in a physical capacity, citing how “excruciating” the make-up process was, he went on to say that he’d be open to a motion capture performance, similar to his role as Ebenezer Scrooge in the 3D-animated film, Disney’s A Christmas Carol (2009).

“Oh, gosh, you know, if we could figure out the Grinch,” he said.

“The thing about it is, on the day, I do that with a ton of makeup and can hardly breathe. It was an extremely excruciating process. The children were in my mind all the time. ‘It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids.’ And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do other things. Anything is possible in this world.”

Now, while promoting her new film, Back in Action, Carrey’s The Mask co-star Cameron Diaz was quizzed by Access Hollywood about whether she’d return as Tina Carlyle in a potential sequel to the 1994 comedy caper, which starred Carrey in the title role; a hopeless romantic who becomes a cartoonish anti-hero after donning an ancient, powerful mask.

“If Jim’s on board, I’ve been riding those coat-tails from day one!” she said. According to the reporter, Carrey has also said he’d be open to returning as Stanley Ipkiss in The Mask 2.

Whether he’ll ever reprise any of these roles, though, remains to be seen. Initially, he said he might retire before playing Dr. Robotnik for a third time, however, he told an AP Entertainment reporter last year that he loves playing a genius and also needed the money.

In 2022, Carrey told E! News’ Daily Pop that he’d only be interested in reprising his role as Ace Ventura from the 1994 comedy film of the same name and its 1995 sequel, When Nature Calls, if the likes of The Dark Knight trilogy director Christopher Nolan reimagined the character entirely.

However, he added: “But for the most part, you know, after a certain time there’s not one cell in your body that is that person anymore so you end up just imitating what you did in the old days and the original inspiration isn’t there.”

Here’s to hoping Carrey will come back to play at least one of his green villainous roles. Whether that’s the Grinch, The Mask, or even The Riddler from Batman Forever (1995).
