Family vacation to Disneyland (September 2022). My parents, my sister, niece, & nephew, my wife, and me.
My wife wanted to do quite a bit. However, she compromised; and stuck close enough with the family on this FAMILY vacation. My sister & niece were enjoying themselves. It was my niece & nephew’s first Disney trip. My (autistic) nephew was okay for the most part. My mom would sometimes watch him (when he would get overwhelmed…while my sister, niece, & wife were still having fun). My dad uses a cane. My mom would stick close to him.
When my parents & my nephew returned to the hotel (they couldn’t keep up for the WHOLE day), I would be with my sister, niece, & wife. Otherwise, I made sure to split my time between the two groups. My sister & niece would ALSO “hang back” at times — for the FAMILY to be together.
Until reading this article, I never gave it any thought. I feel SO FORTUNATE to have family values! Apparently, not everyone does.
I guess it’s all about priorities. When my wife’s parents took us to Disneyland, my wife’s father (he and I don’t really get along, anyway) complained that we were wasting his money. How? While we could easily have kept up with them to ride all the rides for the full day (and into the evening), my wife & I chose to enjoy the scenery & partake of the mascots, as well.
My wife’s parents (just like the lady in the article) think that only the RIDES should matter — even at the expense of enjoying the park with FAMILY. My wife & I would rather enjoy the ENTIRE park…with ALL that it has to offer! However, we don’t believe in sacrificing family over our own enjoyment.
Some people prioritize rides. Others prioritize family. To each their own…I guess.
My opinion is a little different. I am 74 years old with back problems. I would sit in my scooter and people watch and let my family enjoy the rides. After all, that is the main reason you go to Disney. If mom didn’t want to do anything, she should have stayed home. What a waste of money.
I am appaled at this woman’s behavior. I would never do this. My Mom insists on staying home when my son and I go because she knows it’s too much. She expected way too much and is a selfish entitled brat.
Should have let mom sleep in while the daughter did the rope drop. Was at DLR last August, not a lot of comfortable places to sit. They increased seating at food service, but the metal chairs all have straight upright backs making them uncomfortable and limiting time people want to sit in them. My mom loved going, sitting around the parks, people watching and talking to guests and cast members.
Disney is not a relaxing vacation and has worsened due to trying to get value with the price increases, having to schedule and plan, and navigating on your cell phone all day.
Sorry Disney, we have gotten our fill of that for a long time.
Well said. And the mom wasn’t going as the daughter’s guest, she paid for herself. The daughter sounds tyrannical.. Getting up early for work us different than getting up for rope drop, especially with disabilities. The mother should not return unless she rents a scooter and brings a friend who is more understanding of her limitations.
Here mother is a drama queen who was hell bent on ruining her vacation. She is a healthy, working adult. She fell , got a bruise and refused any medical help. I have a relative just like this mother. She even slipped and said because she felt anxious she was deliberately trying to cause friction and bring the whole group down. There is more than meets the eye here.
I’m on the daughters side, as long as the mom didnt need medical attention. The mother said she hasnt enjoyed these trips for a long time. Why is she going then? Nobody wants to pay $150+ a day to walk around and ride nothing. I’d would have said the same thing as the daughter. I’ll walk with you to take the shuttle back to the motel or we can get you a motorized scooter so u dont have to walk so much and you can wait for me in the park while im in line for rides. I’m sure they had phones that they could talk to each other while she was in line or the mom could have took the scooter around and looked at stuff while the daughter was in line and met up after the ride was over. Expecting someone to pay a ton to go to Disney to do nothing while you’re there, is just selfish on the mother’s part. If you cant handle the stamina of a large park, stay back at the motel!
The daughter is overbearing and inconsiderate. The mom wasn’t going as the daughter’s guest, she paid for herself. The daughter sounds tyrannical.. Getting up early for work is very different than getting up for rope drop and waiting in line, especially with disabilities. The mother should not return unless she rents a scooter and brings a friend who is more understanding of her limitations. Some of the sweetest Disneyland moments and not about rushing madly to Space Mountain or Rise of the Resistance, they’re about listening to the music, enjoying the flowers, having a relaxing dinner at Blue Bayou, or a fun character breakfast. Today’s park is an overcrowded, oversold logistical mess compared to that of yesteryear.
Got news for you – the older you get, the more it hurts and the slower it heals. Mom insisted she was okay so DAUGHTER wouldn’t worry as well as attempted to keep up. It’s very difficult to admit you need that wheelchair or scooter, but sheeze, how many more vacations is this impatient girl going to get with her mom? The rides will still be there once mom is gone.

It sounds as if this woman’s main motive for bringing mom along was to help pay the hotel expenses.
